Freshers' Week is Here!
0th week is fast approaching and we couldn't be more excited, because 0th week means Freshers' Week! This is our way to welcome you to Lincoln and to Oxford through some great social events (interspaced with less exciting admin tasks for you to sort out...). Perhaps more importantly, though, it is your way to get to know one another (as well as all of us from the MCR committee)!
The guidance below has details about everything the MCR and the College have in store for you. If you've got any questions, then please don't hesitate to get in touch with anyone from the MCR Committee - we all know too well how confusing Oxford can be!

Programme of Events for Graduate Freshers
Welcome to Lincoln College!
Please read this page in full and consider bookmarking it, as it’s going to be a busy week. Your faculty and labs will most likely have induction lectures and activities for you to attend. We have tried to schedule things in College not to clash with these but don’t worry if you cannot attend everything – indeed, it is probably advisable to make sure you do fit in some time for just yourself in what can sometimes be an overwhelming week of new faces and space.
The most important events for new students are outlined below. Please also note that you will only be able to access SharePoint links (our MCR intranet) through your university email.
Key events for the week
Attendance at these events is crucial for new students, and they have been underlined in the timetable.
Registration
Before coming to Oxford, you must complete the University’s online registration at http://www.ox.ac.uk/students/registration_self_service/. Once you have found your accommodation and settled in, you need to complete your separate College registration during Freshers’ Week. Sign up for a registration session at https://lincoln.ox.ac.uk/graduate-freshers-hub/arriving-at-college. If you are not a UK or Irish citizen, please make sure you have uploaded your documentation to the visa portal before attending registration.
Inductions
There are four important induction meetings in Freshers’ Week.
Freshers’ Dinner
A fancy dinner in hall with your College advisors and fellow freshers on Tuesday is perhaps the highlight of Freshers’ Week. Make sure you have signed up for this when you register, and read on for dress code/timings.

Saturday 11th October
10:00 am - 11:00 am Yoga with Micon. This all-levels yoga class offers a well-rounded experience, beginning with a themed introduction and incorporating breathwork, energy awareness, movement variations, relaxation, and meditation. You'll explore a blend of strength-building static poses and flowing sequences, all guided by the rhythm of your own breath. The practice is designed to leave you feeling more grounded, empowered, and inspired for the week ahead. Whether you're new to yoga or have some experience, this inclusive class is tailored to support you at your own pace. No prior experience is necessary—just come as you are and enjoy moving mindfully. Yoga mats and props are available through the MCR. We kindly ask that you clean and return them after use. This is a wonderful opportunity to unwind, move with intention, and connect with fellow MCR members in a calm, welcoming space.
11:30 am - 5:00 pm LCBC Rowing Taster. Join LCBC for a rowing taster day and BBQ at Lincoln College Boat Club (located on Boathouse Island in Christchurch Meadows). Enjoy free food, compete in an erg relay for Lincoln stash, ask questions, and of course, give rowing a try! There is no experience necessary, and we are open to all levels of commitment, so even if you’re just curious about rowing/coxing, please stop by. Walking directions to the boathouse (leaving from main site) are below. You are welcome to make your own way or there will be senior rowers leading groups down to the boathouse from the lodge every hour if you would prefer to go as a group!
7:00 pm - 12:00 am Emily Carr Party. Glastonbury fears it. Primavera stares over in awe. Coachella was never really in the conversation anyway. That's right: the time for our inaugural Emily Carr Party is upon us.
Here's the drill for those of you who are new. The MCR's EC Party has been going on for decades now, and is hosted on Saturday W0 every term at Emily Carr's house in Bear Lane (which, fun fact, is the original house from which the rest of the property was donated to Lincoln in 1436). The party is open to MCR members only, and runs from 1900 to a strict midnight cutoff of 0000 on Sunday (or the Porters will have my head). It consists of music, free alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and much merriment all around, serving as one of the real highlights of the MCR community every term. The residents of the house kindly give it up such that the party can be hosted, so please be respectful of their space!
Nonetheless, no legendary party would be complete without a killer theme. This term, in the interests of sparking scintillating conversation and getting everyone to get to know each other, the Social Team (me) have selected Dress as your Degree. I'm expecting classicists as great Roman emperors, musicians as rock stars, and molecular biologists as something fascinating and complicated that my puny social-science brain has zero chance of understanding, etc. And if that is insufficient to whet your appetite, there will be a prize for the best outfit! So grab your inventive, academic costumes and your dancing shoes; we're very excited to have you!
Please arrive promptly to the party, as our capacity is limited! We would hate to have to turn you away should you show up late!

Matriculation
The 2025 Matriculation Ceremony will take place at 2:30pm in the Sheldonian Theatre on Broad Street on Saturday 18 October. Preparations will begin in the Langford Room at 1:15pm.
It is absolutely imperative that all Graduate Freshers, including Foreign Service Programme and PGCE students, attend this ceremony. The exceptions are certain visiting students, and students who have attended Oxford before and who have already matriculated. If you are uncertain about whether you should attend, please ask the College Office.
If you do not attend this ceremony, you will not be permitted to reside as a student of the University and thereby study for your degree, or enjoy any of the privileges or benefits afforded by the University.
It is essential that you wear academic dress (i.e. sub fusc clothing under mortar board or cap and gown). You need to wear (1) dark suit with dark socks, or dark skirt with black tights or stockings, or dark trousers with dark socks (2) Black
shoes, (3) Plain white collared shirt or blouse, (4) white bow tie, or black bow tie, or black full-length tie, or black ribbon.
For matriculation, sub fusc is completed by your gown and a mortarboard (which you only wear at graduation, but ought
to carry it during matriculation) or cap (which you can wear for matriculation).
CANDIDATES WHO ARE NOT DRESSED IN THE PROPER MANNER WILL BE TURNED AWAY BY THE UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS.
A full schedule will be communicated to you soon.
