Mindfulness for IBS course We are offering a mindfulness course for women with IBS. This course is offered for free as part of a research study at Oxford University. Zero Waste Week Zero Waste Week is happening again from the 24th to 28th October (3rd week!). It is being hosted by Just Love Oxford and will hopefully be a challenging and inspiring week. Volunteer at the Christmas Lights Festival Christmas Light Festival is back on the weekend of the 25th – 27th November 2016 and once again the city centre will be transformed with even more cultural activities and art installations reflecting this year’s theme “Winter’s Tales”. We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers! If you are interested in events management, the arts or just gaining experience of working in a public facing environment then we just might have the role for you. From being the official contact point for festival visitors to assisting our festival crew and supporting the delivery of our public survey, you could help to make this event a great and memorable experience for everyone! We will be holding an information sharing and get to know you meeting on Wednesday 16th November. For more information on the Festival, please visit our website www.oxfordschristmas.com Christmas Light Festival 2016: Ambassador Volunteer Roles Steward Lantern Procession For this role, you will be welcoming teachers and children to the meeting point, and assist parents with dropping off their child. You will then be allocated to a group of children (there are 10 schools of 25-30 children), help them set up their lanterns, and will be their main point of contact as we walk the parade route. You will then assist the teachers with reuniting parents and children at the end of the parade. Artist Liaison (Sing Christmas) You will be assisting choirs with getting to and from the artist meeting point and their performance pitch. Choirs will perform up to 3 times in different locations between 12pm - 4pm on Saturday. On the day, you will be liaising with Cat Kelly, the Sing Christmas Artistic Director and the show managers at each location. Visitor Information & Public Survey This role involves being the official contact point for festival visitors and assisting with the delivery of our public survey. You will need to find it easy to talk to people and feel comfortable absorbing information in the event guide so that you can help people navigate the different opportunities the festival has on offer. The public survey will involve approaching people in a friendly way to ask for their assistance in giving us some quick feedback. Broad Street Installation Assistant - Illumaphonium You will be assisting the public to engage with the Illumaphonium installation using the equipment provided. This big installation in the centre of Broad Street is interactive and encourages the public to discover themselves the interplay between light and sound. Oxford Castle & Gloucester Green Installation Assistant – Colony You will be assisting the public to engage with the Colony installation, which consists of huge tactile spheres. The installation will be at the Oxford Castle on Friday and on Gloucester Green on Saturday. Area Assistant (Broad Street, Gloucester Green, Oxford Castle) This role involves working in a busy and fast-paced environment as part of a small team, setting up and running an area of the Christmas Light Festival. Responsibilities will include helping to set up the area, erecting signage where needed, liaising with artists and markets traders. During the event, you will help to welcome the lantern procession into Broad St, assist with the set up and running of the Dancin' Oxford stage area in Gloucester Green and help with the overall smooth-running of events. N.B. though this is not a physical labour role, lots of energy and some light lifting are required. Crew Assistant You will be assisting the crew to build the festival in areas across Oxford under the direction of the site manager. This will include laying out infrastructure, assisting the Markets manager with siting traders and the site manager with to create a safe and enjoyable environment. This role will require heavy lifting and provides the opportunity to learn practical, hands-on skills. N.B. crew assistants should have the expectation of some lifting, (e.g. pedestrian barriers and tables). 6. Palestine Talk: ‘Humanitarian Opportunities for Peace and Education’ by Project Hope Monday 24th October, 7pm St Anne’s College (Oxford), Tsuzuki Lecture Theatre Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1236586279695077/ The Director of the Palestinian children’s charity ‘Project Hope’ is coming to Oxford as part of a UK-wide tour to talk about ongoing efforts to advance peace in Palestine and Project Hope’s work. In his lecture, Hakim Sabbah will be discussing the challenges facing NGOs operating in the West Bank, his charity’s youth education initiatives, and the current political situation in Palestine and the city of Nablus. The talk will also provide information for those interested in volunteering in Palestine and will be followed by a Q&A session. 7. Drama Cuppers Freshers, you may have heard something about this fab opportunity already, but, if not, it’s not too late to get involved! Drama Cuppers is an intercollegiate theatre festival, at which groups of freshers from different colleges present short pieces (30 mins max) on a minimum budget with limited rehearsal. You can choose to put on a short one-act play, a few sketches, an extract from a longer work, or even new writing - and in any genre, from the tragic to the slapstick. Anything goes! Prizes are awarded (including one for the best graduate involvement) but overall the attitude is very relaxed - and the main aim is to have fun, meet like-minded people, and taste a small sample of wider Oxford drama! The deadline for entry forms is the end of this Friday, but then you have over two weeks for rehearsal before performing at the BT Studio in the town centre in 5th week. After the great success of 2015-2016 BioStars, we are about to officially open the call for the BioStars 2016-2017 intake, from Monday 24th October, 00:00 (BST). To mark this occasion, we are organising a series of launch events, info sessions and panel discussions across the UK. All are welcome, cake will be supplied, and maybe I'll actually do some DPhil for once!” 3. Lord Florey Talk - Call for Abstracts The Lord Florey Talk will take place on Monday 21st November at 8pm. Anybody in the MCR is invited to submit an abstract to me to take the opportunity to present at this event. It’s a great presentation to be able to put on your CV, and allows you to practice presenting in front of friends. Any subject, any discipline! And there will be wine and snacks if you want to ply yourself (whether presenting or watching) with dutch courage or sugar highs. The presentation should last around 30-40 minutes with question and answers. Please submit a c.200 word abstract to Heather by Monday 24th October ([email protected]). 4. Keble String Orchestra Keble String Orchestra is a non-auditioning orchestra that rehearses on Saturday afternoons in the Music Room at Keble College and performs once a term. we have had a great amount of sign ups at the Freshers' Fair but are still open for more players to join, especially viola, cello and double bass players. Travel to China (free) in Week 10 to lead workshops on current issues! Oxford Global, an education development project, is organising a Model United Nations conference in Shanghai from 15-18 December. We are recruiting Oxford undergraduate and graduate students to lead committee discussions on issues ranging from energy sustainability, global food shortages, access to education, and more. While in China, all basic expenses will be covered—accommodation, food, and a flight subsidy will be provided. You will work closely with Chinese high school students to lead debate on an international relations topic and help guide them toward a resolution. Outreach Are you interested in spreading love of learning and being involved in a non-traditional outreach event? Splash is a student volunteering initiate started at MIT in 1957, which allows local school students to take classes in a broad range of subjects taught by university students. Undergraduate and graduate teachers can give one-off lessons in subjects they are passionate about, and thus hopefully inspire students to learn beyond their traditional school curricula. Examples of past class topics include biochemistry, the psychology of Facebook, Roman tombstones, knitting and the language of the Time Lords! Teachers will need to attend an initial meeting this term, and another short meeting at the beginning of Hilary. There are some optional payments included in this which are the overseas scholarship, the oxford student refugee campaign, and the MCR charity scheme. Leavers Donations / Ditchley Fund A short notice on behalf of our esteemed Treasurer, Josh: As was discussed in the MCR meeting last week, the Ditchley fund is a fund which we can access as the MCR to purchase physical items for the use of MCR members. In the past we have used this money to fund our MCR library, buy a croquet kit with the JCR, and buy a Christmas tree. This fund is formed by donations from graduates and we will be continuing with the same process as previous years whereby a £5 donation is automatically added to battels for all leavers this summer. There is also the option to opt-out of this donation so if you would like to do this then please contact the Development Office ([email protected]) to let them know. In a more general sense, we are trying to increase the transparency of MCR spending as well as publicise accessible funds (such as the Ditchley fund and vacation fund) so keep an eye out for more information coming soon. 2. Sexual Consent Workshop Facilitator training - call for volunteers You will all remember the Sexual Consent Workshops that were organised during Freshers Week back in Michaelmas. We’ll be running them again for the new students arriving in October 2016, and we’d love some help running them! You will be fully trained to run these sessions, and the training will take place some time in 9th week or -1st week of Michaelmas. Dates are still unknown at the moment I’m afraid. The training is provided by OUSU. If you’re interested in running one or more of these workshops in Freshers Week then please e-mail me and I’ll keep you up to date with everything that you’ll need to know. 3. Blankets/Sofas in the MCR It seems that a few of our lovely cosy blankets have gone missing from our MCR. If you’ve inadvertently taken one for a picnic that hasn’t quite made its way back to the room yet, then please do return it ASAP. These blankets aren’t cheap. Comfort costs, people. Also, one of the sofas has suffered an ink stain on one of the seat cushions. The scouts took the cover to be laundered but it wouldn’t budge, so have pulled the classic trick of just turning the cover over. Please refrain from staining it again. External Notices 1. Test your memory with a short online game, and help Student Minds in the process! Researchers at the Department of Experimental Psychology are conducting a study investigating the memory capacity of Oxford students. Previous participants have had lots of fun hunting for treasure in our online game, and it will allow you to compare your working memory to other Oxford students. For every completed session (around 20 minutes) we will donate £1 to Student Minds, the UK’s leading student mental health charity. Visit eelkespaak.nl/wmgame/ to play! Learning Study We are looking for healthy volunteers to improve our understanding of how people learn which are the best choices to make in day-to-day living. The study will take about 1 hour of your time and will take place in the Department of Psychiatry at the Warneford Hospital. OUSU International Students Survey The International Students' Campaign at the Student Union is keen to find out your experiences as an international student at the University, to see where we should focus our campaigning over the next year. The survey is open to all students who are not normally resident in the UK, or who are not British citizens. 4. "A bit tense or worried?" Study We are looking for healthy volunteers aged 18-50 years to take part in a study investigating how a single dose of the medication losartan affects learning and information processing, using computer tasks and EEG. Losartan is currently used to treat high blood pressure. However, we think that it may also enhance the effectiveness of psychological therapies such as Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy. The study involves two appointments of about 3 hours in total. You will be reimbursed for your time. Take a look at lincolnmcr.weebly.com for our brand new Lincoln MCR website, all put together by our own Adam Steel. The hope is that this website eventually replaces a lot of the e-mails that get sent out (like this one!) so the MCR Committee doesn’t clog up your inbox any more than necessary. Over the next couple of weeks the Committee will still carry on sending e-mails as normal while we iron out any bugs in the website, and ideally completely switch over in Michaelmas 2016. Welcome to our new-look MCR website. All of the same information as was on the old one should have made its way over here, but now it's all swishy and flowy and generally much nicer to use. We owe a great deal of thanks to our Secretary, Adam Steel, for putting all of this together. We're also going to be trying to use the MCR website more often for updates, so we avoid sending everybody six e-mails each week. The idea is that the MCR Committee will update their sections of the website, the links to which will be distributed in one e-mail each week. For the next few weeks we'll probably have a bit of overlap with using both to try and iron out the creases before Michaelmas Term. So, please bear with the MCR Committee while we also get used to the new website, and please enjoy using it. It aims to bring together stakeholders from a multiplicity of organisational backgrounds (government, academics, NGOs, non-profits) to celebrate the progress in sanitary provision for women internationally, but more importantly to assess the pressing issues that remain.
