Ninth Week Dearest MCR, Alas, the time has come for me to give up the role of Lincoln College MCR President. On Sunday the clock struck midnight and my reign well and truly ended. I'm looking forward to joining the group of MCR Presidents affectionately referred to as 'Scrap Heap' by my predecessors! Before I do so, I wanted to reiterate my biggest thanks to the current and past MCR committees for working extremely hard to make the MCR an inclusive and welcoming space, and to everyone in the MCR for supporting me this year and being absolutely wonderful people. You are what makes the MCR the best in Oxford! Best of luck to the future committee and Nuno; I know you'll do an amazing job of looking after the rest of us! It has been quite the adventure over the past year and I could say a million things about my experience, but that would bore you all! Instead, I thought I'd attach my speech for you all to read (please see below). Sadly, our MCR committee handover dinner didn't take place on Saturday. But in case anyone is interested, these would have been my parting words to you all: I would like to thank the Rector, Mrs Woudhuysen and the Senior Tutor for dining with us tonight. I want to reiterate how grateful we are to you all for supporting us throughout the year, alongside Carmella, Mel the Chaplain, Alex the Bursar, Michele the Domestic Operations Manager and various other college officers who sadly couldn’t be with us tonight. You make our experience at Lincoln really enjoyable and comfortable, and the least we can do is to applaud you for supporting us during our time here. Believe it or not, but this year marks my seventh year at Lincoln. I first arrived at the Porter’s lodge as a nervous, and perhaps naïve, 18 year old studying French and History, and I’m still here, now studying a DPhil in French literature. Never did I think that in these seven years one of them would be taken up by the Presidency. But if Carmella tells you that you need to join the committee then you do it, no questions asked! And what a time I’ve had! I’m thrilled to tell you that I’ve achieved everything I set out in my manifesto- from a multi-faith prayer and quiet room, Lincoln Unites, our first ever equality and diversity week to more cultural and diverse events in the MCR and often with the JCR, and finally our new College tortoise, Tortilla! I’ve felt immensely honoured to be the first BAME woman to take up the role of MCR president and I haven’t taken this responsibility lightly. I hope that my hard work has paid off to make Lincoln a more inclusive and welcoming community. I certainly hope that in some way I have contributed to you all feeling at home here. But more than this, I’m often moved to have taken on this role during a year that marks 40 years of women at Lincoln, standing strong alongside an all-female MCR executive committee and a fantastic female JCR President. We have been absolute fire this year. I think sometimes we can take for granted the great community that we have here and I want to use this moment to really reinforce how important it is to be kind in this College, whether it’s being kind towards our peers, the committee, College staff and even ourselves. We’re really lucky to be in such an inclusive and welcoming space and it’s key that we look out for each other, especially those who are in a tough place. Last year was possibly the hardest year of my life to date, and I think I was lacking a lot of kindness for myself. In my personal life, there were moments where I honestly felt like I was fading away. Getting through the day felt like an achievement and I had well and truly lost my purpose. The Presidency has been challenging and very frustrating at times, don’t get me wrong, but I’m thankful for the experiences I’ve had because the role has restored my faith and my confidence in myself. It has given me that purpose that I lacked for a short time and it has showed me that I can be a leader, and a strong and kind one! Once again, I urge you all in times of darkness to show this same level of kindness to others and yourselves. I think this Presidency has taught me lot about myself: firstly, that I’m tougher than I thought, that my kindness, our kindness, is never a weakness and always a strength. It’s what makes us human. So let’s keep pumping love and kindness into this great community. I’ve been reminded that the greatest quality to inform every decision I make in life is empathy, and that should never be taken for granted. I’ve felt empowered by this role to keep fighting the good fight, to keep contributing to the community and to be that ally for those who have been marginalised in our society. Watch this space! Finally, I’ve learned that I really like the sandwiches served at college meetings; those I will miss a lot. Nuno, if you’re feeling generous, I’ll be waiting patiently in the MCR for you to hand over an egg and watercress combo! Without turning my spiel into an Oscars acceptance speech, I would like to thank my mum and dad for being quite possibly the best hype girls a President could ever ask for. Now, If you don’t have anything better to do this evening I would highly recommend looking back at Lincoln MCR’s Instagram page. Under many of the photos you’ll find delightful comments from my mum and dad, including the excitable, ‘Yay Noops!’ from my mum, and the more profound, ‘You Go girl! Be the pillar of strength for the community!’ from good ol’ Mr Patel. I think we should all remember that we only get to these sorts of places because of the family, friends and loved ones who have paved the way for us. My parents have sacrificed a lot for me and throughout this Presidency they have reminded me to never forget where I’ve come from. They’re not the only people to thank for making my experience an enjoyable one... I’m sure he’s going to be very embarrassed for being called out but I wanted to thank my partner, James, a fellow Lincolnite, for putting up with my endless moaning about MCR emails, for really being a wonderful person to me during tough times and for allowing me to present him as the MCR President’s First Man at any given opportunity! As Nuno will find out, the President does a really hard job, often a thankless one. They work tirelessly to make the MCR a better place, perhaps 95% of their work goes unnoticed, but they are nothing without a strong and supportive MCR committee behind them. For that reason I would like to thank our committee members who often don’t get enough credit for the work that they put in. To Issy, Ellen and the rest of the social team (Alex, Ciaran, Grace and KC), thank you for organising and running a whole host of fantastic social events that we all have the privilege of benefitting from. At many points this year, you have quite literally risked life and limb in a damp alcohol cupboard to make sure that our glasses our filled and for that alone we are eternally grateful. Alex, our treasurer, though we may not see eye to eye on the importance of pizza at General Meetings (Adele, the future treasurer, it’s very important! Especially vegetarian supreme…), thank you for making sure that our finances are in check, that we are clothed head to toe in Lincoln stash and for attending the often very long Finance Committee meetings. To Heather, much appreciation goes to you for dealing with the MCR mattress scheme, for minuting all of my stupid thoughts at various meetings and for sorting out the questionable pleasure of the housing ballot. Thank you to Kate and Julia, our welfare reps, for quite rightly prioritising welfare in our MCR and making sure that our bellies are filled with Mrs Woudhuysen’s delicious cakes at Welfare tea. To Angeliki, Nuno and Waqas, thank you for nourishing our academic minds with Lincoln Leads and Dissertea, and to Aleks our charities rep for reminding us to support others who are less fortunate. To Adele and Selina, thank you for reinforcing the importance of issues of equality and diversity and to Cameron for advocating for the LGBTQIA+ community. Jake has been instrumental in pushing for graduate access, Hannah, our environment rep has been key in campaigning for better sustainability in the College and finally, Imi has represented the views of our MCR Freshers. I guess I should also take this moment to thank the committee for one particular incident involving the Emily Carr Party. Without giving away too much, think lots of cleaning, lots of rain and two broken gazebos. I can only use this traumatic clean up session as an opportunity to remind you all that we bonded so much after that tempestuous experience! We made it through! But in all seriousness, it has been a real pleasure working with you all and I cannot express how proud I am to have been part of this committee which has achieved a lot of great things for the MCR and wider College! As I pass on the baton I look forward to a) doing my degree, b) becoming irrelevant, as my predecessor has reminded me is the true rite of passage for the MCR President. Don’t worry, I have been forced to promise that I won’t become a hermit like the others! c) I’m looking forward to handing over to Nuno, who I know will do an amazing job as the new MCR President. Best of luck to you and your new committee and I look forward to seeing the amazing achievements you’ll all make across the year. Alas, dearest MCR and SCR, now the end is near and so I face the final the curtain… it is with a heavy heart that after a long and successful year I give up this position. But I want you to know that it has been an absolute pleasure serving you all. Thank you for trusting me and for believing in me. It hasn’t always been easy, and I’ve faced obstacles I never thought I would face, but I hope that after everything I’ve done you all proud. For once in a long time, I can happily say that I’m really proud of myself and the positive impact I’ve made here. To end an extremely long speech (sorry!), this is the part where you have to imagine that I was holding a microphone all this time… I’ve been your MCR President 2019-2020. Nupur Patel, OUT. *mic drop* Do keep in touch; I'll still be around next year and I'm sure I'll be bumping into some of you in the MCR and catching up over tea and biscuits! With best wishes and much love to you all, ♥️♥️♥️ Nupur Patel [she/her] MCR President 2019-20 DPhil Candidate in French Literature Lincoln College, University of Oxford Turl Street, OX1 3DR lincolnmcr.weebly.com Eighth Week Dearest MCR, Firstly, Happy International Women’s Day! My special shout out goes to the women in the MCR Committee who have worked tirelessly to make the MCR an inclusive and welcoming space! It’s been quite the week with our JCR-MCR Alumni Careers event, our trip to Christ Church Picture Gallery, our Italian-themed MCR dinner, the away leg of the Oriel Dinner Exchange our International welfare tea with the JCR. We also had our trip to Downing College which was so much fun! I’m very proud to say that we were all on our best behaviour! This week is a very special one since it is the last week with the current MCR Committee. Be sure to celebrate with us this week at the home leg of the Oriel dinner exchange, Tuesgays, the final MCR General Meeting of the term and the MCR lunch. This Friday evening we also have our Wine and Cheese event. Following this event, please DO NOT enter Deep Hall during the JCR Bop. This breaches the College’s licensing agreement. Don’t forget that this Saturday will be the End-of Term Dinner where we will be welcoming Downing College and I will be officially handing over to the new MCR President! For those of you who will be attending, get ready for some great food and speeches! Then join us in the MCR for some cheese and wine and the chance to celebrate the end of a fab year with the Committee. Everyone is welcome, even those who won’t be attending the dinner! I've noticed that the scout has been doing extra things that he shouldn't be doing like emptying and filling the dishwasher. This isn't his job, nor is it his job to move back furniture and pillows, etc that have been used by MCR members and not put back in the right place. I have noticed this myself in the MCR, particularly at lunch. I just wanted to remind everyone that it is our responsibility to keep the MCR tidy and clean, and not just the committee. If you move things around, when you leave the MCR please put things back and wash up anything you have used. Also, if you see the dishwasher is full please do turn it on or when clean, help to empty it when you can. As ever, please find attached this week’s Hall Menu and you can find me in the MCR tomorrow for President’s Hour! Please see below for one notice! Also, today is the final day that you can submit a vote for the name of our college tortoise who should be arriving this week- yay! I will be announcing the result tomorrow evening. Especially since we’ve had the Oxford Mind Your Head Week this week I wanted to remind you all that whatever you’re going through, remember that you’re not alone. Support is out there and there is no shame in talking about mental health. Wishing you all a wonderful 8th week. Sending everyone lots of love. As soon as the student began to feel unwell, the student went into self-isolation and has remained there; those who have been in close contact with the student have been individually notified. The advice of PHE is that the risk to other students and staff is very low, and that University and College life can continue as normal. As ever, please find attached this week’s Hall Menu and you can find me in the MCR tomorrow for President’s Hour! Please see below for one notice! Also, today is the final day that you can submit a name for our college tortoise who should be arriving this week- woo! Finally, I wanted to talk about one last thing which has been playing on my mind a lot the past couple of weeks. As I reach closer to the end of my presidency, I just wanted to reiterate how important it is to be kind to each other and to ourselves. Kindness is free; it's key and it's what makes us human. Kindness is showing gratitude to scouts, it's thanking college staff who do so much for us, it's appreciating how tirelessly the MCR committee works to make the MCR a better place (for free!), it's looking out for people who are feeling down, excluded or marginalised. It's treating ourselves to that break after a long day in the lab or library. Kindness comes in many different forms and if the news has taught us anything in the past couple of weeks, it's that without it people can really suffer. Let's all spread a little love in a world that can be cruel enough. My demonstration of kindness to myself this week will be rereading the suggested names for the college tortoise. The whole thing brings me so much joy. I wish you all a happy week ahead. I'm always here if any of you need a little kindness. With best wishes, Nupur Patel [she/her] MCR President 2019-20 DPhil Candidate in French Literature Lincoln College, University of Oxford Turl Street, OX1 3DR lincolnmcr.weebly.com
This new decade ahead will be crucial for human history. Using Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, Christina Figueres’ words, “It's a deliberate choice. Ten years from now, in 2030, we will either have written a very positive story, or we will really be condemned to an endless destruction. So for these 10 years we're holding the pen.” We want you to hold the pen for real, and that’s why the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford brings you the 7th edition of the Training Better Leaders course, on 20-22 April. Speakers who have confirmed their attendance include Anthropologist Jason Hickel; Director at London Heathrow Airport Matt Gorman; Oxford Extinction Rebellion activist Zuhura Plummer. Among the organisations represented we will see the Committee on Climate Change, Eco-Age, 2030 Manufacture, HSBC Bank, and the Global Climate Action Support Team at COP 26, to name a few. Third Week Dearest MCR, Welcome to 3rd week! I hope that you have enjoyed all of the events of Lincoln Unites, our first ever Equality and Diversity week at Lincoln! We kicked it off with a special international food fair which included homemade food from countries like Canada, India, Greece and China (on that note, I forgot to say this last week, but a belated Happy Chinese New Year to you all!). We continued the week with a good lad workshop, an inspiring women panel discussion, arts sessions, a soul music night, an exhibition unveiling and plenty more! So many events! A special thanks goes to our wonderful Lincoln Kitchen for putting on a delicious Middle Eastern menu for International Great Hall!- we had so much positivite feedback about this and I was personally dreaming about the amazing tagine that very night... Today we end Lincoln Unites with our LGBTQ+ day. This afternoon we had our PRIDE in STEM discussion and this evening we’re ending things with a special movie screening of Moonlight- think free snacks and great company at 8pm in the Oakeshott Room! Everyone is welcome! The fun continues from Monday…we have Tuesgays, our FREE salsa night, a special Bollywood-themed movie night, an Indian-themed MCR dinner and the away leg of the exchange dinner with Somerville. We like to keep you all entertained. As ever, please find attached this week’s Hall Menu and you can find me in the MCR tomorrow for President’s Hour! Also, please see below for one short notice! Finally, I wanted to remind everyone of two things. Firstly, please do keep the MCR tidy. Wash and put away any plates and cutlery that you’ve used, put back any chairs you’ve moved and please don’t leave any food lying around. It’s our responsibility to look after our space; it's not up to the scouts. Secondly, please take some time to have a look at Lincoln’s Bullying and Harassment policy which can be found on the College’s website. At Lincoln, we have expectations about the way we treat others and the way we should expect to be treated. There is support out there if you feel that these expectations have been violated; any inappropriate behaviour is completely unacceptable and goes against our values as a College. I hope you all enjoy the rest of the weekend and that 3rd week treats you very well! With best wishes, Nupur Patel MCR President 2019-20 DPhil Candidate in French Literature Lincoln College, University of Oxford Turl Street, OX1 3DR

1. Cycling from Bristol to Beijing Cycling from Bristol to Beijing: Living Life to the Full, with Cancer Monday 3rd February at 7:30PM, Sultan Nazrin Shah Centre, Worcester College When Luke Grenfell-Shaw graduated from Durham University in 2017 he had big dreams for the future: teaching in Russia, embarking on a professional career, and even competing at a high level in triathlons. But everything changed in June of 2018 when he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer than had already spread to his lungs. He pursued a 1-year Masters degree at Oxford with Worcester College (2018-2019) during his treatments anyway, during which he re-evaluated what was most important in life. He has now set out to pursue his dream of cycling across the world with family, friends, and other young CanLivers (Luke's term for people living with cancer). From this apparent dead-end, Luke began an epic expedition on the 1st of January 2020: cycling from Bristol to Beijing by tandem to show what's possible with a cancer diagnosis. We're lucky that Oxford is on his route! Come to hear his inspiring story and powerful message as we welcome him back to Worcester and Oxford. Read more about Luke's 2018-2019 school year at Oxford while pursuing his various cancer treatments. Read more about Luke's expedition, Bristol2Beijing. The talk will last approximately 30 minutes, with opportunities for Q&A and free-form discussion afterwards over a drinks reception. Please register using the Eventbrite link below. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cycling-from-bristol-to-beijing-living-life-to-the-full-with-cancer-tickets-88104654393 2. Panacea Stars Develop Panacea Stars Develop application deadline is Sunday, 23 February, 11:59pm GMT and urge all those who are eligible to apply before it’s too late. We welcome ideas at all stages of development that have the potential to impact human health – anything from a therapeutic or diagnostic to a medical device, software application or research tool. We have previously selected finalists with ideas ranging from the very early-stage to the patent-protected. Our vision is to equip young innovators, who would not otherwise have access to expert industry feedback and mentorship, with the skills to take their business idea to an investable position. Since its inception in 2016, Panacea Stars has supported more than 150 startups, growing from strength to strength year on year. More importantly, the startups participating have been increasingly successful after taking part. Examples of our alumni include Cambridge Cancer Genomics and Enterobiotix. We will be awarding a non-dilutive prize worth £100K, free lab space and ongoing business and legal support to the team with the most exceptional idea. However, we want to stress that the real prize is not the cash, it is the mentoring, networking and skills our founders acquire over the course of the programme through interacting with our partners and mentors network, including senior executives from the likes of McKinsey and Co, AstraZeneca, J A Kemp, IBM, Biorad, and others. Did you know £50,000 is up for grabs for start-ups from Oxford University?! The Oxford Seed Fund is a student led Venture Capital Fund based at the Said Business School looking to invest in early stage businesses started by Oxford students or Staff. If you are working on a business or just interested in start-ups / being an entrepreneur, please join the Oxford Seed Fund at the Foundry for our annual application launch event on Friday, 31st January at 5:30pm. You’ll hear from Mihkel Jäätma, an Oxford alumni and the CEO of Realeyes, an emotional artificial intelligence start-up. Mihkel will be taking us through his journey from student to founder and will share his insights on the future of AI. Members of the Oxford Seed Fund will be on hand to answer any questions you have about the 2020 Oxford Seed Fund application process. Drinks and light nibbles will be provided. Science Innovation Union Dear Members, I hope you've had a brilliant start to 2020! To kick of a new decade, we have a thought provoking event lined up for you! We are at a pivotal time where an unprecedented convergence of medical knowledge and technology is revolutionising healthcare. Particularly, rapid whole-genome sequencing and infrastructure building are moving to make a mainstream genomics medicine service a reality in the UK. More generally, precision medicine is already helping more and more patients get better by ensuring the right treatment for the right person at the right time. In spite of the improved health benefits, challenges remain for personalised healthcare in terms of medical ethics, data safety, cost efficiency, acquisition and analysis of large omics data, the complexity of disease mechanisms, and so on. In collaboration with the Centre for Personalised Medicine (University of Oxford), this event will bring together insights from academia, industry and government to delineate where the field is currently, and to discuss what we can do in the continued research and application of these personalised solutions. We're fortunate to be hosting the following speakers who will be discussing the ins and outs of Personalised Healthcare: Professor Joanne Hackett (Chief Commercial Officer at Genomics England) is responsible for their industry engagement strategy by developing, managing and accelerating relationships with commercial organisations − creating opportunities for collaboration both nationally and globally. Joanne is a clinical academic, an investor, and a strategic, creative visionair with global experience spanning successful start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. Professor Simon Leedham (Director of the Centre for Personalised Medicine) is a Cancer Research UK Clinician Scientist and an Honorary Consultant Gastroenterologist. He was appointed as the Director of the CPM in May 2016. He won the United European Gastroenterology Rising Star Award in 2010, the British Society of Gastroenterology Sir Francis Avery Jones Research prize in 2015 and the Cancer Research UK Future Leaders prize in 2017 for his research. Doctor Lauren Harper (Oncology Medical Manager, Roche Diagnostics UK and Ireland) has an MSc and PhD in oncology focused on biomarkers and combinations of targeted therapies. As the Medical Oncology Lead for Roche Diagnostics, she develops and implements the oncology medical strategy, manages new and existing clinical studies, and overall contributes to the delivery of high quality patient care. The event is free as always. Spots are limited, so get registered today at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/personalised-healthcare-from-bench-to-bedside-tickets-86600286789?aff=efbeventtix&fbclid=IwAR0DEFsIbJufSVmkY19tLX2l929cfkAl__ye4FO57cD9T3Zr7XwOPRw8yTU Drinks and refreshments will be provided in the networking session following the event, so please do stick around for that! 7.
