Each year, the Senior Common Room Wine Steward (yes, that is an actual thing - possibly the best job in Lincoln) picks out a few bottles from the SCR Wine Cellar that the MCR members are allowed to purchase. MCR members are invited to purchase a maximum of two bottles of wine from the SCR cellar at SCR prices, to be paid for on next term’s battels. This year we’ve been particularly lucky, and we are allowed choice of:
If you are interested, please fill in this form: https://goo.gl/forms/2QoxLyfqgr7oNZAc2 Please note that availability is first come, first served. So if you wish to order any of these bottles of wine, you’d better move fast! The form will be closed at 8pm on Wednesday 8th Week (30 November). Those MCR members who are successful in purchasing some wine will be contacted with details of how to collect it. More than likely, you will be able to pick it up from Deep Hall during 8th/9th Week, but this is to be confirmed. 2. Want a locker? The Clerk of Works in College has very kindly changed the locks on five of the lockers near Deep Hall, so we can use them again! If you want one, get in touch. 3. Nominate a book for the MCR Library Keep filling in the form to nominate your favourite books/magazines for addition to the MCR Library, and the MCR Committee will work on it over the Christmas vacation to make it happen. The form is here https://goo.gl/forms/4FnO6gQD2JyfsUv82 4. Gowns in the MCR As a result of clearing out the lockers (see item 2), we now have a few spare gowns for communal use! This is, of course, in addition to the ones that Tony and Simon usually have available if you’ve forgotten your gown and you’re going to second Hall. They’ll be hanging up on the hooks in the back of the MCR. Please don’t steal them :-) 5. Hall survey - thank you! On the subject of Hall, thank you to everyone who filled in the Hall survey! We had over 300 responses between the MCR and JCR, which is absolutely fantastic, and College are now looking very carefully at the results. 6. Missing Coat A green parka coat, brand Superdry, size L, went missing after second Hall last week (14 November). If you have it by mistake, or you see it somewhere, please contact [email protected]. Thankyou! –––––––––––––––––––– External Notices 1. Oxford Student Consultancy Survey Do you want to change the way you publish your papers? The Oxford Student Consultancy is helping an Oxford based start-up change the way that your future papers will be published. Do you want to shape the course of that start-up? Please fill in the survey below (this will take you less than 5 minutes) and make things easier for yourself for your next paper! https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/8FMS7KQ 2. Research volunteers needed We are looking for volunteers for a study looking non-invasively at the levels of various chemicals in the brain. We will use a technique called Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. By doing this we hope to understand more about how the brain responds in diseases in which the immune system attacks the brain. The study would involve one visit to theJohnRadcliffe, inwhichyouwouldhaveaonehourMRIscanandabloodtest. We are able to recompense expenses and time. We need volunteers between 18 and 80 years of age, in good health and without a history of epilepsy or any other disease affecting the brain or spinal cord. If you have a metallic implant, cardiac pacemaker, are pregnant or suffer from claustrophobia you should not volunteer. If you are interested or would like to know more we would be happy to discuss the study further with you – please contact us: Dr C Stagg Centre for Functional Imaging of the Brain (FMRIB) Oxford University John Radcliffe Hospital Headington Tel 01865 222 736 Email [email protected] 3. OE Ventures: Start a company over Hilary term! Ever thought about starting your own company? OE Ventures will give you the skills, connections, and mentorship to make this a reality. OE Ventures is a practical, hands-on approach to entrepreneurship, where students team up to build a startup from scratch, supported by workshops and mentors from Entrepreneurs First, Techstars, 500 Startups, Deliveroo, and more. Taking place over Hilary term, and covering everything from validating a business idea to raising money, OE Ventures teaches you how launch a business, by doing it in real life. The most ambitious teams will launch a new business by the end of Hilary, with the chance to pitch to seed investors. Alongside this, we will be running a series of dinners, socials, and networking events. Applications are rolling, so the sooner you apply the better! Application link: https://goo.gl/forms/Cq0OQP4YSEldIsS72 Facebook Event 4. Depression in students survey I am conducting a study on the cross validation of the University Student Depression Inventory (USDI) with students in the UK. This study is done in collaboration with two colleagues from my department (Agata Vitale and Jennifer Kinloch) and with the input of Nigar Khawaja (University of Queensland), who developed the USDI with students in Australia. This study is important because, despite the high rates of depression among students in the UK, there isn’t currently a specific instrument to measure it in this population. We need a large sample to validate this scale. Students do not need to suffer with depression in order to participate. This study has been approved by the ethics committee of Bath Spa University. Students who agree to participate will be directed to an online information sheet, the consent form, a bio form (to gather their demographic details), the USDI, the DASS-21 (this scale assesses depression and anxiety for validation purposes), and the debriefing form. The whole process will take approximately 10-15 minutes. Thanks in advance for your collaboration and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries. The questionnaire can be accessed here: https://bathspa.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/usdi Kind Regards, Gerry Markopoulos [email protected] 5. Oxford Student Publications job advert Interested in business or publishing? Want a terrific addition to your CV? More research volunteers needed I am looking to recruit people to participate in my research project for the remainder of this term (and a week or so after term if you’ll be here in the vac). Even even more research volunteers needed Who are we? We are the Oxford Centre for Emotions and Affective Neuroscience (OCEAN lab) led by Prof. Elaine Fox. We are situated at the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford. Find us at: http://www.psy.ox.ac.uk/research/ocean What do we do? We explore the link between eating behaviour and cognitive abilities in a healthy adult population. We want to understand how impulsivity is linked to our response to food-related information and eating behaviour. We will also investigate if a simple computer-based training task can influence the ability to inhibit actions in response to events. What do you have to do? You will be asked to fill in some questionnaire and perform some computer-based tasks. You need to come twice to the Department of Experimental Psychology (for 1.5 hours each). Further, you will have to do some practicing on your computer at home (approx. 10 mins) every day for 6 days between the two appointments. What do you get? You would be paid £10 per assessment session at the lab and you can also win money on one of the tasks (around £5). Additionally, you will receive a total of £10 for the practice sessions at home. If this study sounds interesting to you, please do not hesitate to contact us for more information: [email protected] You can take time to think about it and ask questions before you decide whether or not to take part in our study! Your enquiry will be kept confidential and you will not be obliged to take part in our study!

Hall survey coming soon - but your feedback is always welcome External Notices 1. OxFund 2. Kabaddi 3. Drama for Postgrads 4. SUSCAM DROP-IN EVENT: Tuesday 5th Week, Cafe Nero (High Street), 2-5pm --- Internal Notices 1. Chapter Day Dinner (9th Nov) - Sign up now! The main note for the day is that sign-ups for Chapter Day dinner on 9th November are open! Chapter Day is the day each term that Lincoln remembers its founders. In practical terms, this means that dinner in Hall that night is 4 courses instead of 3, it’s slightly nicer food, and the MCR lays on some wine. It’s great fun. But if you want a seat in Hall that night, you’ll need to sign up in advance. Go to http://www.lincoln.ox.ac.uk/Online-Meal-Booking to sign up for the Chapter Day Hall on 9th November. The two sittings of Hall remain, with the same food being served at both. Keep your eyes peeled on the Social Team e-mails for details about the wine ;-) 2. Hall survey coming soon - but your feedback is always welcome As Jess said in her e-mail on Sunday, the JCR and MCR are putting together a brief survey to canvas opinion about Hall & food in general at Lincoln. But you need not wait until then! Your feedback is always welcome, and we continuously pass it on to the College & Kitchen. Just e-mail Jess or myself with your comments. External Notices 1. Drama for Postgrads Oxford is a hive of theatrical activity. However, all too often drama within the university is seen as exclusively for undergraduates. Lots is currently underway to bust such myths and ensure that there are ample opportunities for all members of the university, irrespective of level of study, age or dramatic experience, to participate in theatre in Oxford - whether as actors, director, writers, techies, or, crucially, just as audience members. Graduate Drama Drinks // Sunday 20th November // The King’s Arms // 7pm – The Oxford University Drama Society (OUDS) is hosting a drinks evening especially for all graduate students from of 6th week at the KA. Come along and find out more about drama in Oxford, chat with current members of the OUDS committee and meet like-minded postgrads from across the university. A number of different opportunities will be discussed that may be of particular interest to postgrad thespians; and suggestions will be sought for ways to facilitate greater graduate involvement in student drama. If you’re on Facebook, have a look at the event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/2015154465377883/https://www.facebook.com/events/2015154465377883/ Graduate-friendly Productions One of the chief difficulties for theatrically interested postgrads is that the rehearsal processes for many student shows are tailored to the more flexible timetables of undergraduates. Consequently, plans are afoot for productions with rehearsals that are spread out over a longer period of time, held at the weekend or on weekday evenings, and scheduled well in advance. Regardless of what dramatic experience you may have had previously if any, please do get in touch with the OUDS graduate rep at [email protected] if you think that you might be interested in getting involved in some way. Techies, producers, designers, directors – and maybe even writers - will all be needed, as well, of course, as actors. New Play-Reading Group For those who enjoy watching, reading and discussing plays, as much as those who love putting them on, a new play-reading group is currently being organised. Programmes of weekly readings will be scheduled to offer a variety of perspectives on one broad theme or subject per term. Across the year and beyond, we will therefore touch on a variety of the infinite range of interests, concerns, and studies across the university. Potential termly themes might include: the environment, feminism, multiculturalism, medicine, faith, and – especially in light of this tumultuous last summer – politics and current affairs. The emphasis will not only be on widening our familiarity with great drama of all periods, but on discussion and exchange about the big ideas and questions thrown up by the play read on each occasion – and all hopefully accompanied by friends and a drink or two. Again do drop the OUDS graduate rep a line at [email protected], whether to volunteer as a reader, suggest possible themes or plays, or just to express your general interest. To keep abreast of further theatrical news, make sure that you’ve signed up for the Drama Officer’s weekly newsletter. This is the bible of Oxford student drama, as it advertises all productions, student auditions and dramatic opportunities going on in Oxford. You can subscribe to it at http://www.ouds.org/. 4. SUSCAM DROP-IN EVENT: Tuesday 5th Week, Cafe Nero (High Street), 2-5pm Join Suscam on Tuesday of 5th Week on the bottom floor of Café Nero for a drop in information session.
