Hi MCR,

My final MCR Notices e-mail! Maybe. Who knows what will happen, for we’ve now entered the weird and wild world of 8th week.

Also one more finale to add to the fun - the last MCR General Meeting of term is on Wednesday! We’ll be discussing the procedures for the Housing Ballot, as well as receiving an important update concerning College’s implementation of the PREVENT legislation. So do pop along once you’ve had your fill of Great Hall.

Finally, there’s a very exciting opportunity to be a part of a piece of work that Patrice Moor, the Lincoln College Artist in Residence, is putting together. See below for more details.

See you around,
Kev

Internal Notices
1. Fire alarms this week
A message from Lucy Tarrant about recent fire alarms in College:

"See below for the fire alarms that have been triggered over the last two weeks and their causes. As you can see, the majority of these are caused by steam from either kettles or showers. Showers triggering the alarm could be prevented by taking shorter showers (saves water, too!) but kettles can certainly be avoided by placing them somewhere not underneath a sensor. It’s also important to remember to close kitchen doors when cooking. Not only does this avoid unnecessary alarms but it also prevents fire from spreading should the worst happen."

2. MCR General Meeting - Wednesday, 8:15pm
What it says on the tin. If you have a motion or agenda item you’d like to make sure is discussed then please tell your MCR Secretary Adam Steel by Mondayevening so he can compile the agenda and send it out Tuesday evening before the meeting on Wednesday.

3. Take part in art! A message from Patrice Moor, the Lincoln College Artist in Residence

A message from Patrice Moor, the Lincoln College Artist in Residence, about taking part in an installation she is preparing:

"I am Artist in Residence at Lincoln for the next year and a half.  My job is to immerse myself at Lincoln, engage with the life of the College and respond by producing work.  If you want to look at some of my work you can go to my website http://www.patricemoor.co.uk and/or go to Somerville College and look at my exhibition in the Chapel (until the end of Trinity).

I am preparing an installation of around 40 small paintings (between 40-60), all the same size, maximum 8’' x 10” on the top floor of the Garden Building on the left hand side as you come up the stairs. I would like to paint the right eye of at least 20 undergraduates and hang those on the left hand side and of the left eye of at least 20 graduates on the right hand side.  The paintings will be a combination of oil painting and pencil drawing on the canvas.  The installation would be hang  symmetrically but there will be variety in the size and positioning of the eyes.  The installation will be exhibited during Michaelmas 2018.

What I need form you is roughly 15 minutes of your time, during daylight hours, to take some photos of your eyes.  I will take them with my iPhone so it will be quick.  I also need to photograph your face so I remember who the eyes belong to.  If you are interested in taking part in my project, please email me at: patrice.moor@lincoln.ox.ac.uk.

Thank you for your help.  I look forward to meeting you."

1. Adventure Sports Academy Opportunity
Hi - I am a Medical Student at Magdalen College, Oxford, and have some links with an international sports academy by the name of Adventure Sports Academy. This is a Hong Kong based organisation and aims to change the culture towards sport and to increase youth participation in this area. We feel that there is much progress to be made in this field, and in particular are keen to bring to light the holistic benefits of engaging with sports during childhood years. To this end, we are looking for some help in the following areas:
  • Article and research contributor
    • This will be an individual who has a passion for football or basketball and is interested in contributing some articles for us to add to the bank of research that we have been compiling to refine our sports curriculum. These articles will also be used to create an app raising awareness about the benefits of sports which we will share with parents, students, schools, clubs etc.
    • The key themes that we will look for writing on are as follows:
      • The holistic impact of sports.
      • Why sports can precipitate emotional development.
      • How participation in sports can precipitate academic development.
    • This role is to be undertaken during Trinity Term and the Summer Vacation and is to be undertaken remotely, and as such, will leave lots of flexibility for the applicant.
    • It is not likely to be particularly time-intensive, and so will be able to be undertaken concurrent with the applicant’s scholarly endeavours.
    • This role is paid, and the details will be discussed at interview.

  • Summer Internship Programme: App Development. 6-8weeks.
    • The candidate will be expected to work directly with the founder to amalgamate all the intellectual properties that have been amassed over the years into an app to share with parents, students, schools, clubs etc.
    • The app should also be able to measure physical data, e.g. Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, Speed, Agility, and should be able to be used by children in the age range of 18months to 12 years.
    • This is an exciting role for aspiring programmers as there is a very clear real world impact of the work that is expected of the candidate.
    • Return flight to Hong Kong and room and board are covered.
    • Salary is negotiable based on experience.

  • Summer Internship Programme: Chip Development to measure a child’s physical performance over the course of exercise. 6-8weeks.
    • The candidate should be familiar with IoT, and is expected to develop a small wearable chip to measure physical performance.
    • The chip is intended to be implanted into our uniform and must be waterproof.
    • Further details about the exact requirements of the chip will be discussed at interview.
    • The internship will either be based in London (remotely) or in Hong Kong depending on the candidates profile.
    • Salary is negotiable based on experience.

There are a number of students from Harvard and McGill University working on this already, and the candidates will be working with them to create the product. The three roles are interdependent and so candidates are encouraged to recognise that teamwork skills will be necessary to complete this task successfully. Since there is a very clear real-world impact of the above roles, the candidates will not only have a wonderful time working with us, but will have an exceptional work experience report to add to their CVs.

For those candidate who are interested, please can you email me at naeem.iqbal@magd.ox.ac.uk, with a brief (250-400word) cover letter outlining which role you are interested in and why you are suitable for the role as well as your CV. Please also provide details of 1 academic reference.

The deadline for paper applications is Friday 24th March.

Short-listed candidates will be invited to a skype interview with the founder of Adventure Sports Academy with the aim of candidate selection being complete by the beginning of Trinity Term. The selection for our Sports Writers will take place by the end of the Easter Vacation.

2. Oxford Summer Courses require Part-Time Student Helpers
Oxford Summer Courses is looking for Part-Time Student Helpers to accompany international students on day trips and support the On-Course delivery team on arrivals day. You will be required to work between 4 and 5 days per 2-week course. On your work days you will also accompany students to restaurant meals and take part in evening activities. You will work in a team of like-minded people committed to the smooth and successful delivery of a well-organised course. This role is ideal for anyone already staying in Oxford over the summer, who is looking to earn some money without committing to full-time employment.

3. OUSU Research Survey for DPhil Students
Last year OUSU did a review of Masters courses, which we presented to the University, and which has shaped a programme of work the University has undertaken to make improvements in this area. This term, we’re turning our attention to the experiences of DPhil students – that means we need to hear from YOU!

We want to find out how you experience your time as research students in Oxford - we'll be running a survey and focus groups in both departments and colleges.
>>> Let us know your thoughts in our survey <<<
If you’d like to help organise a focus group or would like to attend one, get in touch with Marina, Vice-President (Graduates), on  vpgraduates@ousu.ox.ac.uk. This work will produce a report and set of recommendations that we will use to lobby the University for better provision for DPhil students, both academic and pastoral.

4. Graduate Photography Competition 2017
Current graduate students are invited to enter their photos portraying their life and work at Oxford. Two lucky photographers will win £200 in Amazon vouchers and smaller weekly prizes will be awarded every Friday. For updates and inspiration. follow on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and enter your photos at www.graduate.ox.ac.uk/photo17 by Friday 17 March. Good luck!

5. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR MAGNETIC RESONANCE STUDIES OF THE BRAIN
We are looking for healthy volunteers to improve our understanding of the human brain’s visual learning mechanisms. The study would take a maximum of 2 hours of your time consisting of a single MRI scan. You would be asked to lie still in a scanner and perform some simple tasks involving responding to visual stimuli by clicking buttons.

MRI is a type of brain scan that allows us to see how the brain is organised, processes information and performs skills like speech or memory. This scan is safe and does not involve any needles or injections.

Who are we looking for? Healthy fluent English-speaking men or women aged 18-30 who do not have any metal in their head or body, are not pregnant, have not had surgery, and do not have any metallic implants (e.g. a pacemaker). If you are interested and would like more information please contact Caroline Nettekoven (caroline.nettekoven@psych.ox.ac.uk).

6. Psycholinguistic Experiment
I am recruiting participants for a psycholinguistic experiment currently running in the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics. The experiment is taking place in the following location:

The Language and Brain Laboratory,
University of Oxford,
37 Wellington Square,
Oxford,
OX1 2JF

This experiment is concerned with deciphering more information about the ways in which our brains process speech, and will consist of  a computer based listening task that is completely non-invasive.

You can take part if you are :
  • a native speaker of Southern British English
  • have no known hearing, learning, or language disorders
  • are over the age of 18
The experiment is likely to last around 30 minutes in total, and you will be compensated for your time.

If you are interested, or would like more information, please contact me at  zoe.fletcher@ling-phil.ox.ac.uk.

Many thanks,

Zoe Fletcher
