Ninth Week Dearest MCR, Alas, the time has come for me to give up the role of Lincoln College MCR President. On Sunday the clock struck midnight and my reign well and truly ended. I'm looking forward to joining the group of MCR Presidents affectionately referred to as 'Scrap Heap' by my predecessors! Before I do so, I wanted to reiterate my biggest thanks to the current and past MCR committees for working extremely hard to make the MCR an inclusive and welcoming space, and to everyone in the MCR for supporting me this year and being absolutely wonderful people. You are what makes the MCR the best in Oxford! Best of luck to the future committee and Nuno; I know you'll do an amazing job of looking after the rest of us! It has been quite the adventure over the past year and I could say a million things about my experience, but that would bore you all! Instead, I thought I'd attach my speech for you all to read (please see below). Sadly, our MCR committee handover dinner didn't take place on Saturday. But in case anyone is interested, these would have been my parting words to you all: I would like to thank the Rector, Mrs Woudhuysen and the Senior Tutor for dining with us tonight. I want to reiterate how grateful we are to you all for supporting us throughout the year, alongside Carmella, Mel the Chaplain, Alex the Bursar, Michele the Domestic Operations Manager and various other college officers who sadly couldn’t be with us tonight. You make our experience at Lincoln really enjoyable and comfortable, and the least we can do is to applaud you for supporting us during our time here. Believe it or not, but this year marks my seventh year at Lincoln. I first arrived at the Porter’s lodge as a nervous, and perhaps naïve, 18 year old studying French and History, and I’m still here, now studying a DPhil in French literature. Never did I think that in these seven years one of them would be taken up by the Presidency. But if Carmella tells you that you need to join the committee then you do it, no questions asked! And what a time I’ve had! I’m thrilled to tell you that I’ve achieved everything I set out in my manifesto- from a multi-faith prayer and quiet room, Lincoln Unites, our first ever equality and diversity week to more cultural and diverse events in the MCR and often with the JCR, and finally our new College tortoise, Tortilla! I’ve felt immensely honoured to be the first BAME woman to take up the role of MCR president and I haven’t taken this responsibility lightly. I hope that my hard work has paid off to make Lincoln a more inclusive and welcoming community. I certainly hope that in some way I have contributed to you all feeling at home here. But more than this, I’m often moved to have taken on this role during a year that marks 40 years of women at Lincoln, standing strong alongside an all-female MCR executive committee and a fantastic female JCR President. We have been absolute fire this year. I think sometimes we can take for granted the great community that we have here and I want to use this moment to really reinforce how important it is to be kind in this College, whether it’s being kind towards our peers, the committee, College staff and even ourselves. We’re really lucky to be in such an inclusive and welcoming space and it’s key that we look out for each other, especially those who are in a tough place. Last year was possibly the hardest year of my life to date, and I think I was lacking a lot of kindness for myself. In my personal life, there were moments where I honestly felt like I was fading away. Getting through the day felt like an achievement and I had well and truly lost my purpose. The Presidency has been challenging and very frustrating at times, don’t get me wrong, but I’m thankful for the experiences I’ve had because the role has restored my faith and my confidence in myself. It has given me that purpose that I lacked for a short time and it has showed me that I can be a leader, and a strong and kind one! Once again, I urge you all in times of darkness to show this same level of kindness to others and yourselves. I think this Presidency has taught me lot about myself: firstly, that I’m tougher than I thought, that my kindness, our kindness, is never a weakness and always a strength. It’s what makes us human. So let’s keep pumping love and kindness into this great community. I’ve been reminded that the greatest quality to inform every decision I make in life is empathy, and that should never be taken for granted. I’ve felt empowered by this role to keep fighting the good fight, to keep contributing to the community and to be that ally for those who have been marginalised in our society. Watch this space! Finally, I’ve learned that I really like the sandwiches served at college meetings; those I will miss a lot. Nuno, if you’re feeling generous, I’ll be waiting patiently in the MCR for you to hand over an egg and watercress combo! Without turning my spiel into an Oscars acceptance speech, I would like to thank my mum and dad for being quite possibly the best hype girls a President could ever ask for. Now, If you don’t have anything better to do this evening I would highly recommend looking back at Lincoln MCR’s Instagram page. Under many of the photos you’ll find delightful comments from my mum and dad, including the excitable, ‘Yay Noops!’ from my mum, and the more profound, ‘You Go girl! Be the pillar of strength for the community!’ from good ol’ Mr Patel. I think we should all remember that we only get to these sorts of places because of the family, friends and loved ones who have paved the way for us. My parents have sacrificed a lot for me and throughout this Presidency they have reminded me to never forget where I’ve come from. They’re not the only people to thank for making my experience an enjoyable one... I’m sure he’s going to be very embarrassed for being called out but I wanted to thank my partner, James, a fellow Lincolnite, for putting up with my endless moaning about MCR emails, for really being a wonderful person to me during tough times and for allowing me to present him as the MCR President’s First Man at any given opportunity! As Nuno will find out, the President does a really hard job, often a thankless one. They work tirelessly to make the MCR a better place, perhaps 95% of their work goes unnoticed, but they are nothing without a strong and supportive MCR committee behind them. For that reason I would like to thank our committee members who often don’t get enough credit for the work that they put in. To Issy, Ellen and the rest of the social team (Alex, Ciaran, Grace and KC), thank you for organising and running a whole host of fantastic social events that we all have the privilege of benefitting from. At many points this year, you have quite literally risked life and limb in a damp alcohol cupboard to make sure that our glasses our filled and for that alone we are eternally grateful. Alex, our treasurer, though we may not see eye to eye on the importance of pizza at General Meetings (Adele, the future treasurer, it’s very important! Especially vegetarian supreme…), thank you for making sure that our finances are in check, that we are clothed head to toe in Lincoln stash and for attending the often very long Finance Committee meetings. To Heather, much appreciation goes to you for dealing with the MCR mattress scheme, for minuting all of my stupid thoughts at various meetings and for sorting out the questionable pleasure of the housing ballot. Thank you to Kate and Julia, our welfare reps, for quite rightly prioritising welfare in our MCR and making sure that our bellies are filled with Mrs Woudhuysen’s delicious cakes at Welfare tea. To Angeliki, Nuno and Waqas, thank you for nourishing our academic minds with Lincoln Leads and Dissertea, and to Aleks our charities rep for reminding us to support others who are less fortunate. To Adele and Selina, thank you for reinforcing the importance of issues of equality and diversity and to Cameron for advocating for the LGBTQIA+ community. Jake has been instrumental in pushing for graduate access, Hannah, our environment rep has been key in campaigning for better sustainability in the College and finally, Imi has represented the views of our MCR Freshers. I guess I should also take this moment to thank the committee for one particular incident involving the Emily Carr Party. Without giving away too much, think lots of cleaning, lots of rain and two broken gazebos. I can only use this traumatic clean up session as an opportunity to remind you all that we bonded so much after that tempestuous experience! We made it through! But in all seriousness, it has been a real pleasure working with you all and I cannot express how proud I am to have been part of this committee which has achieved a lot of great things for the MCR and wider College! As I pass on the baton I look forward to a) doing my degree, b) becoming irrelevant, as my predecessor has reminded me is the true rite of passage for the MCR President. Don’t worry, I have been forced to promise that I won’t become a hermit like the others! c) I’m looking forward to handing over to Nuno, who I know will do an amazing job as the new MCR President. Best of luck to you and your new committee and I look forward to seeing the amazing achievements you’ll all make across the year. Alas, dearest MCR and SCR, now the end is near and so I face the final the curtain… it is with a heavy heart that after a long and successful year I give up this position. But I want you to know that it has been an absolute pleasure serving you all. Thank you for trusting me and for believing in me. It hasn’t always been easy, and I’ve faced obstacles I never thought I would face, but I hope that after everything I’ve done you all proud. For once in a long time, I can happily say that I’m really proud of myself and the positive impact I’ve made here. To end an extremely long speech (sorry!), this is the part where you have to imagine that I was holding a microphone all this time… I’ve been your MCR President 2019-2020. Nupur Patel, OUT. *mic drop* Do keep in touch; I'll still be around next year and I'm sure I'll be bumping into some of you in the MCR and catching up over tea and biscuits! With best wishes and much love to you all, ♥️♥️♥️ Nupur Patel [she/her] MCR President 2019-20 DPhil Candidate in French Literature Lincoln College, University of Oxford Turl Street, OX1 3DR lincolnmcr.weebly.com Eighth Week Dearest MCR, Firstly, Happy International Women’s Day! My special shout out goes to the women in the MCR Committee who have worked tirelessly to make the MCR an inclusive and welcoming space! It’s been quite the week with our JCR-MCR Alumni Careers event, our trip to Christ Church Picture Gallery, our Italian-themed MCR dinner, the away leg of the Oriel Dinner Exchange our International welfare tea with the JCR. We also had our trip to Downing College which was so much fun! I’m very proud to say that we were all on our best behaviour! This week is a very special one since it is the last week with the current MCR Committee. Be sure to celebrate with us this week at the home leg of the Oriel dinner exchange, Tuesgays, the final MCR General Meeting of the term and the MCR lunch. This Friday evening we also have our Wine and Cheese event. Following this event, please DO NOT enter Deep Hall during the JCR Bop. This breaches the College’s licensing agreement. Don’t forget that this Saturday will be the End-of Term Dinner where we will be welcoming Downing College and I will be officially handing over to the new MCR President! For those of you who will be attending, get ready for some great food and speeches! Then join us in the MCR for some cheese and wine and the chance to celebrate the end of a fab year with the Committee. Everyone is welcome, even those who won’t be attending the dinner! I've noticed that the scout has been doing extra things that he shouldn't be doing like emptying and filling the dishwasher. This isn't his job, nor is it his job to move back furniture and pillows, etc that have been used by MCR members and not put back in the right place. I have noticed this myself in the MCR, particularly at lunch. I just wanted to remind everyone that it is our responsibility to keep the MCR tidy and clean, and not just the committee. If you move things around, when you leave the MCR please put things back and wash up anything you have used. Also, if you see the dishwasher is full please do turn it on or when clean, help to empty it when you can. As ever, please find attached this week’s Hall Menu and you can find me in the MCR tomorrow for President’s Hour! Please see below for one notice! Also, today is the final day that you can submit a vote for the name of our college tortoise who should be arriving this week- yay! I will be announcing the result tomorrow evening. Especially since we’ve had the Oxford Mind Your Head Week this week I wanted to remind you all that whatever you’re going through, remember that you’re not alone. Support is out there and there is no shame in talking about mental health. Wishing you all a wonderful 8th week. Sending everyone lots of love. As soon as the student began to feel unwell, the student went into self-isolation and has remained there; those who have been in close contact with the student have been individually notified. The advice of PHE is that the risk to other students and staff is very low, and that University and College life can continue as normal. As ever, please find attached this week’s Hall Menu and you can find me in the MCR tomorrow for President’s Hour! Please see below for one notice! Also, today is the final day that you can submit a name for our college tortoise who should be arriving this week- woo! Finally, I wanted to talk about one last thing which has been playing on my mind a lot the past couple of weeks. As I reach closer to the end of my presidency, I just wanted to reiterate how important it is to be kind to each other and to ourselves. Kindness is free; it's key and it's what makes us human. Kindness is showing gratitude to scouts, it's thanking college staff who do so much for us, it's appreciating how tirelessly the MCR committee works to make the MCR a better place (for free!), it's looking out for people who are feeling down, excluded or marginalised. It's treating ourselves to that break after a long day in the lab or library. Kindness comes in many different forms and if the news has taught us anything in the past couple of weeks, it's that without it people can really suffer. Let's all spread a little love in a world that can be cruel enough. My demonstration of kindness to myself this week will be rereading the suggested names for the college tortoise. The whole thing brings me so much joy. I wish you all a happy week ahead. I'm always here if any of you need a little kindness. With best wishes, Nupur Patel [she/her] MCR President 2019-20 DPhil Candidate in French Literature Lincoln College, University of Oxford Turl Street, OX1 3DR lincolnmcr.weebly.com
This new decade ahead will be crucial for human history. Using Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, Christina Figueres’ words, “It's a deliberate choice. Ten years from now, in 2030, we will either have written a very positive story, or we will really be condemned to an endless destruction. So for these 10 years we're holding the pen.” We want you to hold the pen for real, and that’s why the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford brings you the 7th edition of the Training Better Leaders course, on 20-22 April. Speakers who have confirmed their attendance include Anthropologist Jason Hickel; Director at London Heathrow Airport Matt Gorman; Oxford Extinction Rebellion activist Zuhura Plummer. Among the organisations represented we will see the Committee on Climate Change, Eco-Age, 2030 Manufacture, HSBC Bank, and the Global Climate Action Support Team at COP 26, to name a few. Today we end Lincoln Unites with our LGBTQ+ day. We like to keep you all entertained. As ever, please find attached this week’s Hall Menu and you can find me in the MCR tomorrow for President’s Hour! Also, please see below for one short notice! Finally, I wanted to remind everyone of two things. Firstly, please do keep the MCR tidy. Wash and put away any plates and cutlery that you’ve used, put back any chairs you’ve moved and please don’t leave any food lying around. It’s our responsibility to look after our space; it's not up to the scouts. Secondly, please take some time to have a look at Lincoln’s Bullying and Harassment policy which can be found on the College’s website. At Lincoln, we have expectations about the way we treat others and the way we should expect to be treated. There is support out there if you feel that these expectations have been violated; any inappropriate behaviour is completely unacceptable and goes against our values as a College. I hope you all enjoy the rest of the weekend and that 3rd week treats you very well! With best wishes, Nupur Patel MCR President 2019-20 DPhil Candidate in French Literature Lincoln College, University of Oxford Turl Street, OX1 3DR

1. Cycling from Bristol to Beijing Cycling from Bristol to Beijing: Living Life to the Full, with Cancer Monday 3rd February at 7:30PM, Sultan Nazrin Shah Centre, Worcester College When Luke Grenfell-Shaw graduated from Durham University in 2017 he had big dreams for the future: teaching in Russia, embarking on a professional career, and even competing at a high level in triathlons. But everything changed in June of 2018 when he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer than had already spread to his lungs. He pursued a 1-year Masters degree at Oxford with Worcester College (2018-2019) during his treatments anyway, during which he re-evaluated what was most important in life. He has now set out to pursue his dream of cycling across the world with family, friends, and other young CanLivers (Luke's term for people living with cancer). From this apparent dead-end, Luke began an epic expedition on the 1st of January 2020: cycling from Bristol to Beijing by tandem to show what's possible with a cancer diagnosis. We're lucky that Oxford is on his route! Come to hear his inspiring story and powerful message as we welcome him back to Worcester and Oxford. Read more about Luke's 2018-2019 school year at Oxford while pursuing his various cancer treatments. Read more about Luke's expedition, Bristol2Beijing. The talk will last approximately 30 minutes, with opportunities for Q&A and free-form discussion afterwards over a drinks reception. Please register using the Eventbrite link below. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cycling-from-bristol-to-beijing-living-life-to-the-full-with-cancer-tickets-88104654393 2. Panacea Stars Develop Panacea Stars Develop application deadline is Sunday, 23 February, 11:59pm GMT and urge all those who are eligible to apply before it’s too late. We welcome ideas at all stages of development that have the potential to impact human health – anything from a therapeutic or diagnostic to a medical device, software application or research tool. We have previously selected finalists with ideas ranging from the very early-stage to the patent-protected. Our vision is to equip young innovators, who would not otherwise have access to expert industry feedback and mentorship, with the skills to take their business idea to an investable position. Since its inception in 2016, Panacea Stars has supported more than 150 startups, growing from strength to strength year on year. More importantly, the startups participating have been increasingly successful after taking part. Examples of our alumni include Cambridge Cancer Genomics and Enterobiotix. We will be awarding a non-dilutive prize worth £100K, free lab space and ongoing business and legal support to the team with the most exceptional idea. However, we want to stress that the real prize is not the cash, it is the mentoring, networking and skills our founders acquire over the course of the programme through interacting with our partners and mentors network, including senior executives from the likes of McKinsey and Co, AstraZeneca, J A Kemp, IBM, Biorad, and others. Did you know £50,000 is up for grabs for start-ups from Oxford University?! The Oxford Seed Fund is a student led Venture Capital Fund based at the Said Business School looking to invest in early stage businesses started by Oxford students or Staff. If you are working on a business or just interested in start-ups / being an entrepreneur, please join the Oxford Seed Fund at the Foundry for our annual application launch event on Friday, 31st January at 5:30pm. You’ll hear from Mihkel Jäätma, an Oxford alumni and the CEO of Realeyes, an emotional artificial intelligence start-up. Mihkel will be taking us through his journey from student to founder and will share his insights on the future of AI. Members of the Oxford Seed Fund will be on hand to answer any questions you have about the 2020 Oxford Seed Fund application process. Drinks and light nibbles will be provided. Science Innovation Union Dear Members, I hope you've had a brilliant start to 2020! To kick of a new decade, we have a thought provoking event lined up for you! We are at a pivotal time where an unprecedented convergence of medical knowledge and technology is revolutionising healthcare. Particularly, rapid whole-genome sequencing and infrastructure building are moving to make a mainstream genomics medicine service a reality in the UK. More generally, precision medicine is already helping more and more patients get better by ensuring the right treatment for the right person at the right time. In spite of the improved health benefits, challenges remain for personalised healthcare in terms of medical ethics, data safety, cost efficiency, acquisition and analysis of large omics data, the complexity of disease mechanisms, and so on. In collaboration with the Centre for Personalised Medicine (University of Oxford), this event will bring together insights from academia, industry and government to delineate where the field is currently, and to discuss what we can do in the continued research and application of these personalised solutions. We're fortunate to be hosting the following speakers who will be discussing the ins and outs of Personalised Healthcare: Professor Joanne Hackett (Chief Commercial Officer at Genomics England) is responsible for their industry engagement strategy by developing, managing and accelerating relationships with commercial organisations − creating opportunities for collaboration both nationally and globally. Joanne is a clinical academic, an investor, and a strategic, creative visionair with global experience spanning successful start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. Professor Simon Leedham (Director of the Centre for Personalised Medicine) is a Cancer Research UK Clinician Scientist and an Honorary Consultant Gastroenterologist. He was appointed as the Director of the CPM in May 2016. He won the United European Gastroenterology Rising Star Award in 2010, the British Society of Gastroenterology Sir Francis Avery Jones Research prize in 2015 and the Cancer Research UK Future Leaders prize in 2017 for his research. Doctor Lauren Harper (Oncology Medical Manager, Roche Diagnostics UK and Ireland) has an MSc and PhD in oncology focused on biomarkers and combinations of targeted therapies. As the Medical Oncology Lead for Roche Diagnostics, she develops and implements the oncology medical strategy, manages new and existing clinical studies, and overall contributes to the delivery of high quality patient care. The event is free as always. Spots are limited, so get registered today at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/personalised-healthcare-from-bench-to-bedside-tickets-86600286789?aff=efbeventtix&fbclid=IwAR0DEFsIbJufSVmkY19tLX2l929cfkAl__ye4FO57cD9T3Zr7XwOPRw8yTU Drinks and refreshments will be provided in the networking session following the event, so please do stick around for that! 7. Ninth Week Dearest MCR, It’s the end of term; that went by quickly! I hope you all enjoyed yourselves at the MCR Christmas Dinner! I had great fun singing ‘FIVE GOLD RINGS!’ at the top of my voice over a glass of mulled wine. It has been quite the term what with Freshers’ Week and a whole host of academic and social events across the weeks. I hope you’ve all felt happy and at home in the MCR and I can’t wait for what we have in store for you next term! To round off the term (and year and decade!) I have one notice (please see below). Unfortunately, I don’t have any menus or Presidents’ Hour to announce. What I do have, however, is an end-of-term survey (I can hear you sighing…). The committee and I would love to know what you thought of this term and what you’d like to see in Hilary Term! The survey takes a couple of minutes to fill in: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/7MG58/ Also, as a Michaelmas vacation event and follow-up to my Christmas speech, I'll be running a special Love Actually Movie Night (can you tell I’m obsessed…?) in the MCR this Wednesday evening at 8pm. Everyone is very welcome to attend- there will be free snacks and hot chocolate! Finally, all that’s left to say is that I hope you enjoy the rest of 2019! Whether you’re celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or you’re just enjoying the winter holidays, have a restful vacation and I’ll see you all in the New Year. I wish you all much love, happiness and good health for 2020. See you soon! Aspire Oxfordshire: Christmas Dinner 3. Eden McCallum 4. Blockchain Tech Talent networking, Tues 26 Nov, 5.30pm, Oxford Foundry 1. Register to Vote You have a right to vote – please do not miss out!! If you have not registered by November 26, which is only a few days away, you will not be allowed to vote in the election on December 12. Registering is easy, just follow this link, and please do it today:https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. Alternatively, you can use: http://yourvotematters.co.uk/ As a student, you are entitled to register at both your term time and your home address. If you are not sure where you would be on the day, we recommend that you register at both. However please note that it is illegal to vote more than once. If you are not sure that you will be at either address on the day, you have the option of requesting a postal vote. Should you choose to do this, you need to make an application by post, and this will need to be sent in by 22nd November to be sure of being processed in time. An alternative is to request a proxy vote. This means that another trusted adult casts a vote on your behalf. The links above give further information on both these methods. This election may well be the most important for many years to come, and we very much hope that you do exercise your democratic right to take part in it. 2. Aspire Oxfordshire: Christmas Dinner On Wednesday 18th December, Aspire Oxfordshire will be holding a Christmas Dinner for up to 100 local people facing homelessness, poverty and disadvantage. More information about our 'Place at the Table' Christmas Appeal can be found on our website here and on the attached leaflet. If you would like any more information about Aspire and our vital work supporting Oxfordshire's most vulnerable people then please don't hesitate to ask. We are undertaking a survey about parcel deliveries to colleges and would be very grateful if you could fill it in and return it, before the end of November: https://form.jotformeu.com/LegacyTheTeam/student-deliveries-colleges The increasing number of parcels being delivered to colleges is causing additional diesel courier vans to circulate in the centre of Oxford. With this survey, we are hoping to find how to reduce the problem in a way that is acceptable to everyone: students, colleges, courier companies and the general population of Oxford. As the case study simulates our experience as consultants on the job, this is also a great way to find out what consulting is all about! Please register using the link here 4. The collections are particularly strong in law and history and almost all, both modern and early printed, are catalogued onto SOLO; readers from all disciplines are welcomed. 4. Seminar Series: ‘What does it mean to be European?’ Dear all, Hope you're well. I'm getting in touch as I am in the process of organising the seminar series for the new interdisciplinary languages course for Pembroke Access, themed around the question, "What does it mean to be European?" This will be run for 20 Year 12 pupils studying a language at A Level. I am looking for Masters or DPhil students who might be interested in contributing to this seminar series, teaching 20 pupils from both the North West and London via Skype on their area of research. They don't necessarily need to be a linguist - what I am interested in is guiding the participants in understanding the notion of being "European". This would be ideal for not only linguists, but also those specialising in history, literature, politics, sociology or anything else, provided the subject matter helps to answer the question mentioned above framing the seminar series. Other seminar topics we have lined up in this series are as follows:
The date of the seminar would be any of the following (whichever is most convenient): 12th March; 19th March; or 2nd April. The time will be around 5pm, for an hour. Please could you let me know if you are interested in participating. I need to know relatively soon, by 18th October, so I can organise reading lists etc. and get information out to publicise the course. To express interest, please email me on [email protected], citing your area of research, reading you might set, and a prospective seminar title. 5. Welcome Drinks at Pusey House Library Please find attached a poster for the annual welcome drinks event at Pusey House Library. I would be very grateful if you could display the poster in your library, and encourage theology and history students and staff (and anyone else who might be interested) to come along and find out about the library and archive collections at Pusey House, and the popular Scriptorium writing group. Or even come along yourself! (See attachment) 6. Debate Chamber- Summer School Teaching Opportunities for Maths, Physics and International Relations 2. Uncomfortable Oxford is recruiting student guides! 3. Recycle Your Cycle 4. Volunteer Coaches needed for Summer School 1. Debate Chamber- Summer School Teaching Opportunities for Maths, Physics and International Relations Debate Chamber - Summer School Teaching Opportunities for Maths, Physics and International Relations, July and August 2019 (London based) We are a small educational company established in 2003. We offer students a taste of their chosen subject at undergraduate level, enabling them to make a more informed choice about their university options, as well as to have fun getting really stuck into some challenging academic material together with equally enthusiastic peers. We’re a little different to other tutoring companies, in that we don’t coach students to pass their school exams, and we don’t give university interview or other applications advice. Instead, we seek to appeal to students with a genuine intellectual curiosity and a desire to explore academic material in a more sophisticated way than is often available in schools. At Debate Chamber we believe in a style of learning which is not constrained by the requirements of examinations, and which offers students the chance to engage with some great academic material for its own sake, rather than in an instrumental way. We encourage students to explore material more independently, pursuing their own interests and questions, rather than trying to second guess the desires of an examiner, interviewer or teacher. We have almost completed recruitment for 2019, but are still looking for a couple more people to teach Mathematics and Physics, and International Relations. You can find out more about the content of our all courses on our website here: www.debatechamber.com. Most of our Tutors are post-graduate students, and a minimum of an undergrad degree in a relevant subject is required for any teaching role. We are based in central London (Bloomsbury), and the rate of pay is £160 per day (all lesson plans and teaching materials are supplied, although there is plenty of scope for you to adapt them to your own style). We run an eight week summer programme, so depending in your subject there would be likely to be somewhere between two to eight weeks of work available. To find out more about the tutoring positions and to apply online please go to: http://debatechamber.com/work-with-us/ If you have any questions, or would like to send your cover letter and cv directly, then please contact Jessica Harvey-Smith, at [email protected] or on 0800 810 1058. 2. Uncomfortable Oxford is recruiting student guides! Uncomfortable Oxford was founded by two Oxford University students in 2018 to create discourse in the city of Oxford about 'uncomfortable' aspects of our shared history. It runs walking tours, blogs, public lectures, and outreach programs in order to engage with these histories and their impact on the modern city. We explore many uncomfortable topics, such as: legacies of imperialism, inequality, unethical funding, gender and discrimination, religious violence, slavery, and inequality. In order to grow further, we need efficient and dedicated students to apply to be a guide with us over the summer! We pay our guides £25/tour, with an increase once you have been with us for awhile. If you are interested in getting involved and you plan to be in Oxford over the summer, send us a message with a brief description of yourself and why you think you would excel in this position. Applications should be sent to [email protected] Learn more about us on our website at: https://www.uncomfortableoxford.co.uk/ Looking forward to meeting you! 3. Recycle Your Cycle Recycle Your Cycle (www.recycleyourcycle.org.uk), is a social enterprise working with the prison service to refurbish, bicycles and then sell these through the charity sector enabling charities to raise funds for their particular cause. We have set-up workshops at 10 prisons, HMP Cardiff, HMP Ford, HMP Hewell, HMP Liverpool and HMP Nottingham, HMP Onley, HMP Stalling, HMP Stocken (Midlands), HMP & YOI Swinfen, and HMP Wandsworth where prisoners are trained in bicycle and vacuum cleaner repair and refurbishment, this helps with their rehabilitation and hopefully enables them to find employment upon their release. In addition many prisoners are working towards bicycle industry recognised qualifications. The charities then get the benefit of a quality refurbished product that they can sell at a good profit. We now work with over 20 UK charities around the country supplying refurbished bicycles and vacuum cleaners, enabling these charities to raise additional funds for their cause. Since we began in 2015 Hospices have raised over 200k and growing monthly, as well as enabling more sectors of the community to gain the health and social benefits of cycling. We are therefore looking for donations of used bicycles that can be refurbished and of course we would collect them from you. 4. Volunteer Coaches needed for Summer School Universify Education is looking for enthusiastic students who are passionate about university to act as Volunteer Coaches on our summer residential and 3-day Easter weekend at Oxford University. We inspire Year 10 students from non-selective state schools to strive for, apply to, and be accepted at highly-selective universities. Our intervention starts earlier than most outreach programmes, giving students the time to develop their goals and achieve the required GCSE grades to make a good application to university. Students attend academic sessions, delivered by academics, and undergraduate volunteers provide student welfare support and ongoing coaching throughout the programme. Help run our summer programme in Oxford between 10th- 17th August, 17th-24th August, or 24th- 31st August 2019 and receive free meals and accommodation and join our extensive leadership and coaching training programme. Our volunteers play a vital role in leading student groups, providing pastoral care and delivering one-to-one academic coaching. Our team of professional coaches, who specialise in working with excluded pupils, provide all volunteers with training in what makes an effective coach. You will also receive training in mental health first aid and safeguarding. Apply by midnight on 26th June 2019 at universifyeducation.com/volunteer/ for an opportunity to help young people to achieve their dreams of attending university and to continue breaking down the barriers to higher education. This collaborative conference aims to bring together multiple disciplinary perspectives to explore how human mobility is mediated from above and below. It will examine how physical and social infrastructures operating within and across localities permit, facilitate and inhibit human mobility, and ask how individuals respond to these design and plans “from above”. In doing so we hope to reflect upon important social processes and enquire how human mobility fits into these processes. We have an exciting list of speakers and moderators including Catherine Briddick, Mary Bosworth, and Lorenzo Pezzani from Forensic Oceanography. Date: May 31st to June 1st 2019 (9:30 am to 5 pm) Venue: Catholic Chaplaincy (85-87 St Aldate's, Oxford OX1 1RD). Speaking of stellar, we had a corker of a 2nd week with the MCR Dinner (#foodgoals), Great Hall and the Catz Exchange Dinner. We’ve got another great week ahead with Yoga, Doggy Afternoon Tea, Groove Quad and theEurovision Final Night...all this, plus another week of delicious food in hall. (see attached for the menu). It’s going to be EPIC. Please don’t forget that alongside college staff and Junior Deans, we have graduate peer supporters (see attached poster) who are always there for you whenever you need them. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you’d like to chat to them! Register to Vote for EU Elections Time is running out to register to vote Time is running out to register to vote in the upcoming European elections. If you’re not already registered, you have until Tuesday 7 May to do so. To register, visit www.yourvotematters.co.uk – all you need is five minutes and your national insurance number. Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday 23 May. The results will be announced on Sunday 26 May. If you’re unable to vote at a polling station on the day, you can apply for a postal or proxy vote. A postal vote allows residents to post their vote to the Council in advance of the election. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday 8 May. If you’re a student registered in Oxford and at your home address, you must choose one place to vote. It is an offence to vote more than once at a national-level election. EU citizens are able to register to vote in European elections, but will need to fill in an additional form as part of the process. For more information, to find out if you are already registered or if you would like a paper application form, visit www.yourvotematters.co.uk or phone the City Council Electoral Registration Office on 01865 249811 or email [email protected] 2. Student Wellbeing and Mental Health Strategy – Student Consultations The University is writing a Student Wellbeing and Mental Health Strategy and we want to hear your views. Each session will cover our draft strategy and implementation plan, and there will be a chance for you to brainstorm ideas and tell us what is most important to you about student wellbeing and mental health. All welcome!
If you are a JCR or MCR welfare rep, we will be holding another consultation just for you. If you can’t make these dates but would like to contribute to the strategy, you can do so online – keep an eye out for a link in your e-mails. 3. Disability Discussion: Equality and Diversity Forum Event On MAY 20th from 2-5pm at MERTON college there will be an EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY FORUM EVENT, entitled 'DISABILITY DISCUSSION'- everyone is welcome! Pre-booking is required (see attached for more info!) 4. University outreach programme volunteering opportunity Universify Education seeks enthusiastic students who are passionate about university to act as Volunteer Coaches on our summer residential and 3-day Easter weekend at Oxford University. Please visit our website for further details. Apply by 31st May 2019 at universifyeducation.com/volunteer/ for an opportunity to help young people to achieve their dreams of attending university and to continue breaking down the barriers to higher education. 5. Volunteers Needed for a Study Volunteers needed for a study investigating the effects of a potential novel antidepressant drug on the way the brain processes certain kinds of information We are looking for healthy participants aged 18 to 45 years. In order to participate, you must be in good health and you must not have a history of any mental disorder. You would be randomly allocated to 18 days of treatment with a drug called “pramipexole” or a placebo. After treatment has been established, non-invasive brain imaging (fMRI) and various psychological tests will be conducted. You will be asked questions about your medical history to check your suitability for an MRI scan. Contact: pramipexole.study@psych.ox.ac.uk 6. Student Advisory Group Boost your CV and join the University’s official Student Advisory Group If you want the opportunity to gain some consultation experience, the Student Advisory Group is a great start. As a member of the group you will be part of a specially selected cohort of students who will become the main point of contact for central University student feedback. As well as providing real-time feedback on proposed or implemented process changes within the University and Oxford SU, you will also influence campaigns, events, and more, while meeting regularly with other students. The meetings will take place once a term from around 6pm – with drinks and pizzas provided. In addition to attending termly meetings, you may also be asked to respond to three online polls per term. Simply fill out the online application form by Monday 6 May. The group is a joint initiative by the University and Oxford SU, and there are just 40 places available. The first meeting will take place on Tuesday 23 May. For further information see the Student Engagement page on the Oxford Students website. 7. AHRC-TORCH Public Engagement with Research Summer School The AHRC-TORCH Public Engagement with Research Summer School (PERSS) 2019 is now accepting applications from DPhils and ECRs in the Humanities. The PERSS is a 5-day programme of skills workshops, lectures, and small group sessions designed to give participants the skills to integrate public engagement into their research. This year’s PERSS will take place in Oxford from July 8th-12th, 2019. Participation is free and registration is open to DPhil students and Early Career Researchers in the Humanities. Application forms can be found on our website: https://www.torch.ox.ac.uk/article/ahrc-torch-public-engagement-summer-school-2019. Applications are due 10 May 2019. For any queries, contact the Graduate Project Coordinators, Sumner Braund and Glenn Cahilly-Bretzin, at [email protected] 8. Research Study Worrying a lot? Interested in taking part in a research study? We are looking for healthy, right-handed volunteers, who are aged 18-50 years and fluent in English, to take part in a study investigating how a single dose of the medication losartan affects emotional processing, using brain imaging (fMRI). Losartan is currently used to treat high blood pressure. However, we think that it may also enhance the effectiveness of psychological therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. The study involves two appointments of about 4-5 hours in total. You will be reimbursed for your time. For further information please visit http://www.oxited.co.uk/our-healthy-volunteers-research.html or contact Theodora A. Thoroddsen at [email protected]. Lincoln College MCR 6th Week Notices
Internal Notices 1. MCR Elections - Saturday - Husts 6pm, Voting Open 7pm - 10pm 2. MCR Housing Ballot 3. Fire Alarm incidents in 2017 4. Lost Pen in Library External Notices 1. The Dealer App –––––– Internal Notices 1. MCR Elections - Saturday - Husts 6pm, Voting Open 7pm - 10pm The elections for half of your next MCR Committee are happening this Saturday. Adam has already sent out an e-mail with the candidates and instructions for voting in absentia, but for those of you who are eager to come and exercise some democracy in person then here’s all the information you need. Husts will begin at 6pm in the Oakeshott Room. Each candidate will make a short speech outlining their suitability for the office they wish to occupy, and then the floor is open for questions. This is your chance to grill your next Committee, so take the opportunity! After husts have finished, we’ll descend to the MCR where voting will open at 7pm. To ease the democratic process, the Social Team have very kindly organised a party that coincides suspiciously well with the elections. You will need your bod card to vote. Only Ordinary Members of the MCR are permitted to vote (not Associate or Honorary Members). Voting will close at 10pm, with results announced shortly after. The party then continues until 11pm, at which point who knows what happens…come along and find out! 2. MCR Housing Ballot See Adam’s e-mails from yesterday about signing up for the MCR Housing Ballot if you want to be in the running for College accommodation next year. Regarding the amendment of the banding structure in the ballot, Adam & I conducted a thorough review of our housing ballot system to seek out areas that could be improved. The banding structure/eligibility was one such area, and so we thought it appropriate to amend these to be (a) easier for future MCR Committees to administrate and (b) more robust to possible attempts to ‘cheat the system’. This second point should not be underestimated, as over the last few years a growing minority of people have attempted to place themselves higher in the ballot than they are eligible to be. In hindsight, we should’ve discussed these with the wider MCR in a General Meeting before implementing them, and we’re sorry that we neglected to do this. We’ll use the banding structure from last year (based on number of years in Lincoln accommodation, rather than number of years as a Lincoln postgraduate student) and have a discussion in the 8th week General Meeting about possible improvements to this structure in future years. As ever, any questions/comments/queries about the housing ballot, just get in touch with myself or Adam. 3. Fire Alarm incidents in 2017 There have been a number of near-miss fire incidents in College in the first months of 2017, and College is understandably keen to avoid these from happening. Below is a list of all of the fire alarm incidents in College since the beginning of 2017. More veteran members of the MCR may recall a time when fire alarm incidents were circulated every week. We will be returning to those glory days. So, let’s all try and avoid things like burning toast and cremating pizza in the future so your incident doesn’t wind up in an e-mail! Also, as a general reminder, students should remain in the kitchen (and flat!) when cooking, but also remember to shut the kitchen door. Kitchen alarms are triggered by rapid heat (i.e. fire), whereas alarms in corridors and bedrooms are triggered by smoke. So, if you burn toast and the kitchen door is open, it will trigger the alarm in the corridor outside. Three of the incidents below will be dealt with by the Senior Dean. DateLocationIncident 14-Jan Turl St Duckers workmen/dust 17-Jan High St Cooking 19-Jan stc 20 Panel fault 22-Jan Mitre Mitre restaurant 23-Jan LCS Wine Café 24-Jan Mus Rd Cooking 25-Jan Bear Lane Burnt toast 26-Jan LCS Wine Café 03-Feb Bear Lane Oven left on unattended (flat empty) 11-Feb Bear Lane Pizza cooking/cremating in empty flat 11-Feb Turl St E-cigarette 13-Feb LCS Walton St Coop (bakery) 15-Feb Turl St Duckers workmen/dust 17-Feb Turl St E-cigarette (same room as prior alarm) 4. Lost Pen in Library One of our own MCR members, Thomas Frost, has left a black fountain pen in a black leather pen case on Sunday morning in the library on one of the desks. When checking later on the same day, it was gone. The pen was a gift and has quite a lot of sentimental value. If anyone has any information about said pen, please do get in touch with Thomas ([email protected]). ––––––– External Notices 1. The Dealer App The Dealer is on a mission to save everyone money on their food and drink and revolutionize the way people give back. The Dealer App has launched its beta version in Oxford and it needs test users to enjoy money off food and drink. Yes that is actually what they are offering! The deal is simple: they have got 100 venues in Oxford who have agreed to give everyone on The Dealer App discounts at certain times of the day. All they ask in exchange is that you consider giving a tiny amount (£0.30) of the money The Dealer saves you back to the local community in support of the fight against homelessness. You can also give back in the form of time, 10 minutes (which you can exchange for a volunteer shift when you hit two hours) or you can just pass on a good deed. The app is free, gets you a discount at your favorite venues and helps everyone give back. We are looking for people to trial this version of the product and give any feedback they have on design, layout and any requests for deals that you want to see that are not currently on there. To download it type ‘the dealer app’ into the App Store and start saving and giving! Lincoln College MCR 5th Week Notices

The first 6 questionnaires relate to everyday events and mood and take 5-10 minutes to complete. The online questionnaire in the final 7th week will be a 20 minute questionnaire related to your mental well-being. It is estimated that this study will take up to 2 hours 20 minutes in total and you will receive £20 for completion of the entire study (initial testing session and weekly online questionnaires). Keep that Hall feedback coming How ‘bout all those changes at the start of term? Are they working? Are you going to Hall more? What else can be done? Keep letting me and Jess know! 3. MCR General Meeting - Wednesday 8:30pm (/after Great Hall) Another friendly reminder that the next MCR General Meeting is on Wednesday, with a start time largely dictated by when Great Hall finishes (because I may or may not have realised that Great Hall & the General Meeting were on the same evening…). Look out for an e-mail from MCR Secretary Adam Steel with the agenda. 4. MCR Elections coming up And another friendly reminder that your MCR Committee Elections are coming up in a few weeks time! If you’re remotely interested in being one of the following positions on the MCR Committee, please get in touch with the incumbents and they will be more than happy to answer any questions you’ve got and tell you how much fun they’ve had being on the MCR Committee! The positions being elected this term are: - President (incumbent Kevin Ray, [email protected]) - Treasurer (incumbent Josh Abbott, [email protected]) - Secretary (incumbent Adam Steel, [email protected]) - Social Secretary x2 (incumbents Glenn Cahilly-Bretzin & Michael Ben Yehuda, [email protected] and [email protected]) - Welfare Officer x2 (incumbents Rose Mortimer & Jochen Kockert, [email protected] and [email protected]) In particular, if you are interested in being President, Treasurer, Secretary, or Welfare Officer, then OUSU are running a ‘Winter Training Conference’ this term on Sunday 29th January to train common room representatives. They’re opening this up to potential representatives as well, so if you’re interested in attending then please e-mail me. It will be *F*R*E*E* (i.e. MCR pays). If you’re interested in a different position on the MCR Committee, then don’t be afraid to start talking to the incumbents now! The elections for the rest of the MCR Committee take place at the beginning of Trinity Term. Full details of your MCR Committee members can be found here http://lincolnmcr.weebly.com/committee.html. 5. New Library clear-up practices starting soon Here’s an important notice for all of you regular Lincoln Library users. At the moment, the Librarians clear desks between 9am and 10am each morning to prevent desk-hogging, moving all unattended items to a Lost Property desk near the entrance. Unfortunately, this Lost Property desk has turned into more of a long-term storage for notes and books without homes. From now on, instead of things being moved to the Lost Property desk, they will be moved to a grey Lost Property bin. Once that bin is full, it will be moved to the JCR. If you have reason to believe you’ve got things in the Lost Property bin then you’ll be able to go and retrieve them from the JCR. So, best way to not get caught out is to stay by your stuff while library staff are clearing out desks each morning, or come back early enough to pick up anything that you left there the night before. Basically, if you keep your stuff with you, it won’t go missing. Simple! ––––––– External Notices 1. Just to let you know, for anyone around in 9th week, lunch will continue in Deep Hall between 12.30pm and 1.30pm, Monday to Friday. A smaller variety of soups, salads and baguettes will all be available, on your bod card as normal. Coffee and pastries will also still be available between 8.30am and 11.30am. Thanks Simon No sign up, just turn up!! Lincoln College 8th Week Notices

Decorate the MCR & Hall - meet in MCR at 8pm Thursday Exactly what it says on the tin - meet up in the MCR at 8pm on Thursday 1st December to put up the Christmas tree and some decorations around the MCR. If you’re feeling particularly creative, bring your own handmade decorations to put up! The more the merrier! Once we’ve made the MCR look suitably fabulous, we’ll move on to Hall to see if we can’t improve on the JCR’s efforts… 2. SCR Wine - pick up your wine from Deep Hall (until end of 9th week) For those of you who ordered wine from the SCR Wine Sale, your bod card numbers and the amounts to charge to them have been passed on to the Accounts department in College, so you will be batteled for the cost of the wine in the new year. However, since I’m sure many of you have done as I have and purchased them as gifts, you are now able to collect the wine you’ve ordered from Simon in Deep Hall. He’s got a list of names and who ordered what, and he’ll be very happy to help you out any time between 9am - 2:30pm, and 6:30pm - 11pm, Monday - Friday, until Friday 9th Week. 3. Kitchen charge does carry-over to next term To clarify a point that was made in the first few weeks of term but I’ve been asked about a number of times this week, your kitchen charge will carry over to next term. If you’ve got money left on your account next term, this will be retained and the new kitchen charge added on to it at the beginning of next term. This is a change from previous years, where the balance was reset at the end of each term. Instead, that balance will reset at the end of Trinity term. This scheme is being trialled by College this year, and if too many people wind up with £200 on their card and a week of Trinity term left then we’re likely to wind up going back to the old reset-at-the-end-of-each-term scheme. ––––––––– External Notices 1. Oxford RAG Christmas Jumpers OUSU and Oxford RAG have teamed up to make some Oxford-y Christmas jumpers! They’re £15, all profits go to RAG, and there are two designs. Does it still meet our needs today or should we consider an alternative solution? To better understand requirements, we are holding a major VLE review, consulting students and staff across the collegiate University, including people who do not currently use WebLearn. During Michaelmas and Hilary Terms, we will be running surveys, workshops, interviews and other events. The college with the most student responses to the survey will win a barrow-load of ice cream - so what are you waiting for? Share your views: www.it.ox.ac.uk/VLEreview 3. They’ll be hanging up on the hooks in the back of the MCR. Please don’t steal them :-) 5. Hall survey - thank you! On the subject of Hall, thank you to everyone who filled in the Hall survey! We had over 300 responses between the MCR and JCR, which is absolutely fantastic, and College are now looking very carefully at the results. 6. OE Ventures: Start a company over Hilary term! Ever thought about starting your own company? OE Ventures will give you the skills, connections, and mentorship to make this a reality. OE Ventures is a practical, hands-on approach to entrepreneurship, where students team up to build a startup from scratch, supported by workshops and mentors from Entrepreneurs First, Techstars, 500 Startups, Deliveroo, and more. Taking place over Hilary term, and covering everything from validating a business idea to raising money, OE Ventures teaches you how launch a business, by doing it in real life. The most ambitious teams will launch a new business by the end of Hilary, with the chance to pitch to seed investors. Alongside this, we will be running a series of dinners, socials, and networking events. Applications are rolling, so the sooner you apply the better! Application link: https://goo.gl/forms/Cq0OQP4YSEldIsS72 Facebook Event 4. Depression in students survey I am conducting a study on the cross validation of the University Student Depression Inventory (USDI) with students in the UK. This study is done in collaboration with two colleagues from my department (Agata Vitale and Jennifer Kinloch) and with the input of Nigar Khawaja (University of Queensland), who developed the USDI with students in Australia. This study is important because, despite the high rates of depression among students in the UK, there isn’t currently a specific instrument to measure it in this population. We need a large sample to validate this scale. Students do not need to suffer with depression in order to participate. This study has been approved by the ethics committee of Bath Spa University. Students who agree to participate will be directed to an online information sheet, the consent form, a bio form (to gather their demographic details), the USDI, the DASS-21 (this scale assesses depression and anxiety for validation purposes), and the debriefing form. The whole process will take approximately 10-15 minutes. Thanks in advance for your collaboration and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries. The questionnaire can be accessed here: https://bathspa.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/usdi Kind Regards, Gerry Markopoulos [email protected] 5. More research volunteers needed I am looking to recruit people to participate in my research project for the remainder of this term (and a week or so after term if you’ll be here in the vac). It is a very cool study looking at the effects of transcranial electrical stimulation on maths cognition, which is a lot safer and more painless than it sounds. If you’re interested please get in touch by emailing [email protected] and I’ll send you more information! Many thanks in advance xxx 7. We will also investigate if a simple computer-based training task can influence the ability to inhibit actions in response to events. What do you have to do? You will be asked to fill in some questionnaire and perform some computer-based tasks. You need to come twice to the Department of Experimental Psychology (for 1.5 hours each). Further, you will have to do some practicing on your computer at home (approx. 10 mins) every day for 6 days between the two appointments. What do you get? You would be paid £10 per assessment session at the lab and you can also win money on one of the tasks (around £5). Additionally, you will receive a total of £10 for the practice sessions at home. If this study sounds interesting to you, please do not hesitate to contact us for more information: [email protected] You can take time to think about it and ask questions before you decide whether or not to take part in our study! The main note for the day is that sign-ups for Chapter Day dinner on 9th November are open! Chapter Day is the day each term that Lincoln remembers its founders. In practical terms, this means that dinner in Hall that night is 4 courses instead of 3, it’s slightly nicer food, and the MCR lays on some wine. It’s great fun. But if you want a seat in Hall that night, you’ll need to sign up in advance. Go to http://www.lincoln.ox.ac.uk/Online-Meal-Booking to sign up for the Chapter Day Hall on 9th November. The two sittings of Hall remain, with the same food being served at both. Keep your eyes peeled on the Social Team e-mails for details about the wine ;-) 2. Drama for Postgrads Oxford is a hive of theatrical activity. However, all too often drama within the university is seen as exclusively for undergraduates. Lots is currently underway to bust such myths and ensure that there are ample opportunities for all members of the university, irrespective of level of study, age or dramatic experience, to participate in theatre in Oxford - whether as actors, director, writers, techies, or, crucially, just as audience members. Graduate Drama Drinks // Sunday 20th November // The King’s Arms // 7pm – The Oxford University Drama Society (OUDS) is hosting a drinks evening especially for all graduate students from of 6th week at the KA. Come along and find out more about drama in Oxford, chat with current members of the OUDS committee and meet like-minded postgrads from across the university. A number of different opportunities will be discussed that may be of particular interest to postgrad thespians; and suggestions will be sought for ways to facilitate greater graduate involvement in student drama. If you’re on Facebook, have a look at the event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/2015154465377883/https://www.facebook.com/events/2015154465377883/ Graduate-friendly Productions One of the chief difficulties for theatrically interested postgrads is that the rehearsal processes for many student shows are tailored to the more flexible timetables of undergraduates. Consequently, plans are afoot for productions with rehearsals that are spread out over a longer period of time, held at the weekend or on weekday evenings, and scheduled well in advance. Regardless of what dramatic experience you may have had previously if any, please do get in touch with the OUDS graduate rep at [email protected] if you think that you might be interested in getting involved in some way. Techies, producers, designers, directors – and maybe even writers - will all be needed, as well, of course, as actors. New Play-Reading Group For those who enjoy watching, reading and discussing plays, as much as those who love putting them on, a new play-reading group is currently being organised. Programmes of weekly readings will be scheduled to offer a variety of perspectives on one broad theme or subject per term. Across the year and beyond, we will therefore touch on a variety of the infinite range of interests, concerns, and studies across the university. Potential termly themes might include: the environment, feminism, multiculturalism, medicine, faith, and – especially in light of this tumultuous last summer – politics and current affairs. The emphasis will not only be on widening our familiarity with great drama of all periods, but on discussion and exchange about the big ideas and questions thrown up by the play read on each occasion – and all hopefully accompanied by friends and a drink or two. Again do drop the OUDS graduate rep a line at [email protected], whether to volunteer as a reader, suggest possible themes or plays, or just to express your general interest. To keep abreast of further theatrical news, make sure that you’ve signed up for the Drama Officer’s weekly newsletter.
